Just for discussion sake...Will the same type of performance be acceptable to the Ole Miss folks?...a good coach that cant get over the hump? I think it is a legitimate question when you look at coaches like Cut and Bower?
Time will tell
If he can consistently win 7 to 9 games, I think Nutt can stay in Oxford for the next 20 years. Correct me if I am wrong, but I really don't get the sense that Ole Miss has a national title mindset. If they can win the West once every five years and compete for it one in three, I think Ole Miss will be satisfied. Whereas, Florida and Ohio State expect to win or be in the picture for the national title every year. Bama expects it. LSU to a certain degree expects to be in the SEC championship picture every year with a shot at the NC too, although LSU has had enough lean years as of late to be pessimistic as well. My point being, 7 to 9 wins per season is acceptable at Ole Miss, State, probably South Carolina, certainly Vandy and UK. Right now, that is not enough at other schools. Arky just proved that.
While football is no doubt an obsessions for many (~50%) of Ole Miss fans, the social aspect of football in Oxford is what drives the local economy and as a result the demands. If they have a winning program in place, people show up for games and by in large have their expectations met. I honestly think the outlook of the entire state is better when Ole Miss is winning, but I don't think that means winning an SEC title or national title.
The condo craze in Oxford had it seeds planted by Eli and competing for the West. If Nutt can get Ole Miss back to that atmosphere, whether he wins the SEC or not, I think most of the people will be satisfied...our at least enough to keep him in place.
