still can't travel with more than the possession limit. When you cross the state line then you start dealing with the Lacey Act I think

Heck when you ship them, you have to label the box with a list of the ducks contained within I do believe.
There will be a day....

Yep.

Possession limit is 2x daily limit, no matter where you are, except in the field. In the field, all you can have on you is the daily bag limit.

If you hunt are on a 3 day hunt and limit out first two days, you have to gift or eat some of the birds before you kill any more.

So the answer to the poll is (b). You can only have the daily bag limit in your possession while in the field.

I SOOO DO NOT agree with that law!! If you are gone a 3 day trip or longer and limit out all days, you should not have to give meat away or eat it just so you'll be legal to go home!! What if you want to take it to have Sausage or Jerky made out of it and you are trying to keep the meat to have enough to take in????? BULLCHIT LAW!! :?
I'm not singling you out, Pntlhunter - but like it or not that's the law.

Personally, I don't think you can beat Jimmy Dean patty sausage. I mean, when you've got the 'good' stuff, why bother with all that dried-out chuncks o' duck parts. Besides, ducks are a whole lot better on the grill or smoked, than ground-up with God knows what holding it together.

The only reason to have duck ground into sausage is because it isn't fit to eat any other way. Since that isn't the case - it just shows you got more ducks than you know what to do with (for lack of variety in how it's 'fixed' for the table). That is the whole point behind the possession limit - to keep folks from taking more than they can use.......just so you can go shoot some more.

The law was written before the advent of refrigerated mechanisms. You weren't supposed to kill any more than you could salt and hang in the meat house before it spoiled. Now, since you got freezers, you can preserve more - year round, without it going bad.

'Nothing wrong with a fella wanting to enjoy a full limit every day - all of us would probably like to have that opportunity. And that's our weakness......we always want more. But the responsible thing to do is take only what you really think you're going to consume. I have duck 2 times a week.....gumbo and smoked. That's 104 ducks a year. I feel safe with a 1-year 'back-up' in case the next season sucks.

'Don't like the law, huh? I tell you what - drive 2000 miles to Canada (one way) and quit shooting when you reach 16 ducks and 16 honkers.........you don't hear me whining about it, do ya? It's a privilege to be allowed to hunt, and I'm not about to do something stupid and jeopardize my privilege to enjoy hunting up there. It's just that simple.

How much is enough?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of these guys who goes out and kills hundreds of ducks a year because it's fun and I can. I'm basically just speaking out for the people that go to camp and hunt 3 or 4 days and then don't go back or only go back one more weekend. They don't get a lot of hunting in, and kill limits for 3 or 4 days and get in trouble because they abided by the daily limit.

I reside in the same ballpark you do anat when it comes to conservation and totally agree with you, BUT, the Possesion limit needs to be abolished, like you said it was written a long time ago. If they are concerned with the duck population, then why in the world don't they lower the daily limit back to 3 ducks and the season to 45 days, instead of liberal seasons for 10 straight years!!!!!!

See, I figured out a way to solve all of this. I eat what ducks I bring home THAT NIGHT. The reason I did this is to keep birds from ruining from freezer burn or something. You owe those birds more than that to have to throw them out. There is not a single duck in my freezer. It takes 5 minutes to tenderize, dip in flour, and fry to a golden brown, and that is one of my favorite ways to eat duck if you ask me. But there are so many ways to cook it that takes a little more time, but are well worth it.

Give 12 to your wife, 12 to each child, 12 to each parent, and so on. But if I'm not mistaken, aren't duck parts, even in your freezer, still property of the federal government? I mean do you honestly eat that much duck. If you do, you're one of the few. Most people I know leave it in the freezer for 3 years until they clean it out and throw it all away. Anatidae, that is the most ducks I've ever heard of someone eating...good for you. It is awesome that some people still eat what they kill, and kill only what they can eat.

Every time the feds come check us one of the first things they ask is do we keep any ducks in the freezer. Every time we tell em the same thing. No one is suppose to leave ducks in the camp freezer but they are welcome to search if they like. Most of the time this satisfies them. We have had one or two come look but always nice about it. In the last 5 or 6 times they've checked us they've written 2 tickets total and one of them was dismissed. Not bad considering how much we hunt. We usually get a visit when the ducks get piled up in our area. Doesn't bother us at all!

I agree BR549, if you're not breaking the law, you don't have anything to worry about.

I believe if a warden showed up at my camp, I would share my whiskey, beer, whatever was on the counter for snackin and whatever was on the grill; he could use the facilities, sit down and watch the game, but if he asks to look in the freezer I believe I will politely tell him to get screwed! and to leave!

And no, we don't have hardly any ducks at all in the freezer, I just don't consent to searches for the fun of it.

No offense Wingman, thats just the way it is.

I agree with Meeka, but wingman you come by the camp and when youdo go into the freezer, be sure and rack the ice trays. Lord knows as bad as this season has been there aint no ducks in there.
