sandhill crane hunt
sandhill crane hunt
man just got back from texas.. hunted cranes for the first time.. DR2 hooked us up with Stoney Trainham.( aka.Stoney Craneham) this boy landed'em bout less than 10 feet in front of us.. it was truly amazing.. anyone who's never hunted these birds owes it to theirself to take the time and go.. don't go and do that skyblasting/pass shooting crap.. decoy'em in and get personal with'em.. very graceful bird.. nothing i had expected.. i've got some pics and short video clips i'll try to get posted.

Glad y'all had a great shoot qckmstr. Stoney said y'all were sure-nuff good shots - even past 10 yards! - and that usually makes a big difference.
If y'all go back, should not be too hard to round up a hunting party.
This photo is my favorite from y'alls hunt!

Tuel, Crainham brings a whole 'nother level of crane hunting - 10 yard shots instead of 40+ yards. And lots of them.

MISSISSIPPI SANDHILL CRANES ARE A SEPERATE SUBSPECIES, ARE RECOGNIZED AS "ENDANGERED" SPECIES, AND ARE SUBJECT TO FEDERAL PROTECTION THEREIN, BUT...
Over 500,000 sandhill cranes winter in northern Texas. Entirely granivorous, an abundance of grains, such as sorghum and corn, combined with ample water holes in this region provides superior wintering habitat. GetDucks.com's experienced and specialized outfitter, is ideally located and with relatively few competitors, consistently brings flocks of sandhill cranes right into his fleet of custom-made, full-body stuffer decoys.
Sandhill crane hunting in Texas is a must-do for dedicated wingshooting enthusiasts, and chances are that if you try it just once you’ll find yourself returning often. Sandhill cranes are extremely wary game birds with keen eyesight. With nearly 7 feet of wingspan, sandhill cranes are a beautiful sight to behold as they gracefully decoy into the spread, are absolutely delicious table fare (with not a hint of waterfowl flavor, it is for this reason diehard crane hunters commonly refer to these majestic birds as “sirloin in the skyâ€), and are stunning additions to wingshooters’ or gamebird collectors’ trophy rooms.
On our fully guided sandhill crane hunts, hunters most commonly experience birds decoying to with 20 or fewer yards of the generously large, comfortable, portable A-frame blind complete with chair-back seating that provides perfect concealment from the cranes’ excellent eyesight; oftentimes the birds land within mere feet.
