Mike, we started when our kids were much younger.... probably 6 or 7.
And we are conservative, southern Baptist, sunday-school teachin', church-going folk.
We didnt have "the talk", but we talk about it to them on a fairly regular basis - according to their ability to understand. About what our beliefs are, and what the consequences of premarital sex are. We didnt want sex and relationships to be a taboo subject, but something they knew we were serious about.
We have always had animals - and they did their thing... and from an early age the kids understand that the sexual act produced offspring.
Now that my kids are in high school and college, we have to deal with things going on with their friends, like homosexuality in high school, multiple sexual partners at 'parties', bi-racial relationships, sexual activity in public places (its common for high school kids have sex in the movie theaters !! ) - and since it is not taboo, our kids tell us what is going on with their friends.
Talk to them now, before they become sexually active and you have to deal with some unpleasant things in a few short years....
