Hey ever'body. I just got into this duck hunting this year. MAN! Has this been fun! But I need some advice. Ok, I need a lot of advice. None of my old hunting gear looks anything like what I see on those outdoor tv shows. I guess I'll suffer through this year with what I have or can borrow, but I'd like to know what all I need to get for next year. Do y'all have any suggestions?

Welome. Depend on where you hut. Camo clothes to match surroundings. Timber different that marsh hunting as far as what is there already.

Just remember you don't need every gadget, call, or new camo clothes that come out to kill some ducks.. They are birds with very small brains. If you can't out think them then you may have some other issues..

Hey, that's the stuff we wore back in the '70's when I began this crazy stuff. Didn't have the Canvas Hodgeman's til 1985 or so. We had Royal Red Ball waders and hip boots. No Gore Tex, no thinsulate. Rubber, Wool and Cotton. Good god gurdy I got cold.

If you are just getting started you will need a large bank acount.
Duck hunting is not a poor mans sport. When you're broke like me, you have to get creative. I'm still wearing the same hodgman waders that I purchased 10+ years ago. Have so many patches and caulk and gasket maker on them I believe they are 10lbs heavier than when I bought them. Check the classified section and you can probably get some deals on decoys, calls, other gear, etc. And good luck to you. Hope you have more ducks than most of us do.

New guy welcome aboard! Don't go buy all new camo. About the only two things you really need clothes wise are some 3.5mm waders (maybe canvas breathable since it's so hot in Jan.) and a Drake EST wader "jacket". I'm sure you already have camo t-shirts. It doesn't get cold enough to need much more than that. You can kill ducks sitting on a bucket in the middle of an open field, just ask Ducks Be Us. Just try to blend in. Hope your pockets are deep because you'll spend some dough chasin' the ducks that never really make it down anyway.

If you don't have a blind bag you can justify with a plastic grocery bad i.e Kroger/WalMart. It simply attaches buy tying a knot on your wader strap or clip. you basically just fill it with shells, vienna sausages, nabs, hot sauce, etc. If you have a thermos immediately pour out coffee and fill with HOT DAMN, preferrably 100 proof and not the 80....double check and make sure as this is the most important gear. Make sure you have plenty of snuff. If you are not a dipper get some [b]skoal bandits. One hand shaking feeding mallard call. If you can't blow a call get the mallard call ring tone blue toothed to your phone. When ducks come into the area just hold it up and make sure the volume is on set as high as it will go.....in case it is really windy. Hope this helps.

Pump gun, gun strap, 3" steel #3's, 2 dozen decoys, decoy sack, Haydells DR85 call, 3.5 mm neo waders, cheap waterproof jacket in any splotchy brown pattern, FACE MASK since keeping still is a lost art, a means to get from the truck to the hole (4 wheeler, boat or your feets), pull up a tree or some cover and you are good to go. Everything else is window dressing.

Gloves are over rated. Gloves stay wet. Gloves are like having 2 extra wives around at all times in the way. Skip gloves and learn to adapt. Water keel decoys suck donkey bungs, if you buy them you will eventually take a torch and some sand and convert them. Potted meat and Vienna's are too much work. Take pop tarts, they don't "crumb up" a call near as bad as nabs, and dogs love them.

1. Hot Hands or Heat Factory

2. A Spinning wing (per 2 dozen dekes in your spread)

3. A BS Filter (at least if you are planning on staying around here long
