Duckwarden, I'm glad you replied and I know exactly what you're saying about the hard-core deer "poachers", for lack of a better word, but why regulate the weapon. The behavior is the problem, not the weapon choice. Regulating the weapon will not (and has not) achieve the desired result, in my opinion.
The three WMA's upon which you may not leave the gravel road until 5:00 a.m. are Lake George, Mahanna & Twin Oaks. Myself and others have assumed this is really a duck hunting type of rule but I 'spose it applies to all hunters. The regulations say "no person" but if it only applies to duck hunters then I'm going squirrel hunting very early with enviromentally friendly shot.

Duckwarden, why think the tele-check program will work when the DMAP program never did. Our club was on the DMAP program for 5 years, doing all the measurements, tagging, jawbones, etc. Since it didn't give the MDWFP the information it wanted about the deer population, why will tele-check? I think this is someone pipe dream to get more money into the state. I wish the Kentucky DWFP site was up so I could show everyone what this tele-check crap is. Bout have to give them a damn GPS coordinate where you kill the deer.

Greenhead22, the DMAP program was voluntary so needless to say about 10%(?) of hunters participated at best. The Tele-check is mandatory for everyone next year, while this season it is a phase in year, and voluntary. In theory, problems that occur this season should be ironed out before next, we'll see.
You got to admit that every state has some kind of check-in station or tagging system for deer. It was really only a matter of time. While nothing works 100%, having our previous "laissez faire" system was nice while it lasted.

If tele-chek is about stopping the poaching problem, we have an answer to that already. Let the men in the green trucks get off their butts!

The problem is that the Ms dept of wildlife isn't willing to take a hard look at the poaching problem. In order to catch people breaking the law you have to have well paid honest officers on the ground and a bunch of them..Instead of spending the dollars on increasing the pay, quality, and number of officers on the job the dept. gives us tele-check so we can do the work and have another pain in the booty legality to deal with..
I am not implying that there are no good quality game wardens out there but I have met my fair share of high school drop-outs that could not tell north from south wearing the uniform and writting tickets...tele-check is just another in a long line of bulls--t programs that save them money so they can have a multi-million dollar office building( there's your improved game enforcement money hard at work)

We have GOT to stop the Bastards that kill 8 or 16 Gobblers during season, and another half dozen during the off season. The same guy jack-lights deer, fishes with "electronics" and nets, and shoots ducks after the season. We have to start somewhere. The tele-check system is somewhere. You go to Illinois and kill illegal turkeys or ducks and you stand a VERY good chance of getting LOCKED UP!!! Thats the way it needs to be here. I've lived in Mississippi all my 41 years and I'm sick of hearing Billy-Bob dumb!*& bragging about killing 9 turkeys during season. It's got to stop, and we've got to stop it, or the anti's will stop it for us....I for one, and with you DuckWarden...

Let me see if I can clear a few things up for yall. First you can hunt any animal in the state of Ms with any size weapon you choose. The .22 and .22 mag excluded law is for after sunset when coon hunting. If you want to hunt the tree rats with a 300 mag thats your choice. The game warden(me) probably will not belive you but you can if you want to. Deer hunting with a 22 is legal also. Hog season is not open year round. true we dont have a hog season but you can only hunt them when a season is open. When bow season is open you can hunt them with a bow, etc. Any other time of the year you have to have a depredation permit from the mdwfp. And tele-check is more or less for biologist to keep tabs on the deer herd not as an enforcement tool for the officer in the field. And if you dont like our laws most of wich have a 100.00 fine as a max. Move to a western state where there restrictions make ours look like swimming pool rules. You never here the TRUE SPORTSMEN of our state bitch about the regulations that are in place to protect our natural resources.

If this tele-check program is such a great help with deer populations, then how come only two other states, Kentucky and North Carolina, are using the program. If this program wasn't BS then the most prominent whitetail states would be using it, such as Texas. We've had a tele-check program in place for years and years, it's called insurance companies. As far as RN989 goes you want to talk about money being spent to raise pay. I started out at 21000.00 a year to do this job and now im at 22,700.00 Holy **** they sure are doing alot of money spending on those raises arent they. You come try to raise a family on that. Hold on I know it was my choice to do it, And I love it. But when people run off at the mouth about stuff they know nothing about it rubs me like sand paper. Next time you see your county warden hanging out at the sheriffs office go shake his hand cause not only is he the lowest paid law enforcement officer in the state he is the most over worked. Go to the state web site and youll also see we are one of the few that require a 2 year degree to be hired, and we attend several continuing ed classes at state every year. Those high school drop outs are not that they are just older officers who cant retire cause retirement pay is lower than the money they make a month.

This post is going in ten different directions now. Please don't slam the Game Wardens.

Fellas, I don't have a problem with game wardens or conservation officers. But you've got to admit this tele-chek thing is stupid. Tell me the purpose??? I don't care what they are doing out west!
I might could see the logic if we were trying to increase the numbers in a declining herd.

This is from the KDWFP site concerning the tele-check. Look how low the kill numbers are every year. I'm guessing no more than 20% of the deer harvested are called in.

Guys, have to throw in my two cents. If they say you got to do it, then you got to do it or pay the fine/ticket/whatever. I think tele-check is better than mandatory check in for all deer taken. I wouldn't have a problem calling in a deer. And if I was at camp I'd call as soon as I got to a phone. There will be outlaws, as well as people not happy with change. So my adivse is to follow the rules, turn in outlaws and do the right thing ALWAYS. baldduck

Okay, I have a few comments. Arkansas has a similar program in which you have to check your deer in after you harvest them. The fine for not checking the deer if you get got is well over $200. Like someone else said, it is more of a check on wildlife populations instead of a law enforcement tool.
Now as far as the MDWFP Law Enforcement officers being high school drop-outs, think again. In a recent study that I conducted, 80% of the MDWFP personnel had a college education. They also have to attend a certain number of "continuing education" programs each year. I personally know several MDWFP personnel, and trust me, they work longer, harder, and get paid less than most people on this forum!! They work many nights and spend many hours filling out paperwork and going to court to help prosecute violators. We should respect each and every Law Enforcement officer in the state for the work they do!!!

Duchaholic,
Why don't you try reading my post before you go off half-cocked..I said that what we needed to reduce poaching was Honest, well paid officers and a bunch of them.....Where from that do you gather that I am implying that I am not concerned about your ability to raise your family.......READ THE POST COMPLETLY NEXT TIME
I myself am in law enforcement and want nothing more than for all of us to be paid a high premium for the job we do..The better the pay, then the standards can be raised to where they should be. Damn I have a Bachelors of Science and I don't make crap...
Also that multi-million dollar headquarters building in Jackson is one place that your pay raise went for sure...
