I'm of the same opinion about Leupold scopes....good scopes for the money. 'Only rifles we have, that don't have Leupolds on'em have Zeiss optics. Only difference between Zeiss and Leupold is....in low-light, you can see the Zeiss crosshairs, better.....'can't find'em on a Luepie. So, functionally, they're basically equal on the light-gathering characteristics IMHO. In THAT comparison, Leupold is definately a better value.
Sorry cain't answer question re: difference btwn II and III (that wouldn't contain a grain of sarcasm). I know nothing about Nikon scopes....other than you look in the small end of it.

The best low-light scope made today is the Simmons Aetec. I got mine for $145 plus tax. I went out to a gun shop and used the Aetec, Leupold, Zeiss, Redfield, and the Swarovski in an attempt to read the electric meter in low-light conditions. The Aetec outperformed all of the higher priced scopes. For reasonable price scopes go to www.ultout.com

Well you are in luck, got my Browning MarkII 7MM Mag here. That $145 Simmons Aetec outperformed the $1000 Zeiss and Swavorksi greatly. My dad was going to buy the Swavorksi befoe looking at the Aetec. Leupold started having problems last year when their high variable scopes started fogging up on the inside.

Tell ya what......I'm not a real good rifle shot (heartbeat makes the crosshairs go all over the page).....but I'll bring one of my Zeiss packages out there when GC gets here, Friday night, and we'll let HIM shoot 3-shot groups at 200yds outa both guns every 15 minutes PAST 'dark'.......for a box of 'steel' (GC gets the shells/looser buys)....and I ain't talkin' 'bout no X-perts or Estates, either.....Are you IN?
Man, this is a Great promotion for the shoot!
GC, my Zeiss is sittin' on a heavy barrel 22-250.....no recoil compared to his overbored belted magnum with 8" of muzzle lift at ignition. X22,
I have to say that a simmons could not hold a candle to a Zeiss!! No way no how!!! Out of the question!!! You must be crazy!!!! When donkeys fly!!! I have a .270 w/ Zeiss 1.5-6X42, and a sako 7mm mag. w/ Zeiss 2.5-10X48, and with a Full Moon and no law against hunting after dark, I could hunt all night and feel confident with my optics! By the way where do you get all of your high tech info like the fact that Leupolds have foging problems? Do you just pull these facts out of that hole at the top of your legs?!

I have the varixII 3x9x50 and I love it.. I have it on a Browning 7mm STW. The diffrence between II and III is the aspherical Lens system. The III has a 3 lens system and the II only has a 2 lens system. They say that the three will gather more light, however I have compared the two at dusk and there aint no big diffrence for the money.. I would suggest the Vari XII. It is the BEST all around scope for the money. I would might consider the Atec if it would stand up to the big caliber. I have a buddy that had one on a 300 and it would stay sighted in with the recoil.. Go with the Vari X II.. YOu won't be disappointed!

you can fix the prob with not being able to see the crosshairs on the leoupold by getting heavy duplex crosshairs. i got these on my 3.5x10x50 and they do great in low light conditions

I'm telling you if you have never shot a gun using the Aetec, you are missing out. The gun shop owner could have sold my dad easily the high dollar Zeiss or Swavorski, but wanted him to look through the Simmons. All I am saying is that you don't need to buy this high dollar equipment to kill game. I could care less if you go buy the $350-$1500 scopes, I'll take the $145 Aetec and kill as many and probably more deer in lower-light conditions than you will. But Dixie Boy you left out one thing about your statement, the headlight attaching to that Leupold. If guess if you pointed the gun up towards the moon you could see it and shoot at it. I'll take that challenge, but I'm shooting my gun. Don't want GC's shoulder to get knocked out again cuz of shooting Maggy!!!

Been fooling with optics for a lot of years now, and the best new scope on the market for the money is the Bausch and Lomb Elite series. It runs in the same price range as the Vari X II, but will transfer more light at dark thirty than a Vari X III. I can bring two of my rifles and let you do a side by side comparison if yo would like. As far as the AETEC goes, the Tasco World Class Plus is just as good of option in that price range.

I have always shot using Tasco and Redfield scopes because I like the wide angle TV view. I have never cared for oval reticles til I started using the Aetec. I still prefer the wide angle view, but can't got back to those scopes because they cannot outperform the Aetec.

GH22, I have to say I do agree with you on the fact about price and meat on the table. My dad is a gunsmith and I grew with the opportunity to try just about anything, and Leopold or Zeiss or any price range scope didn't calm my nerves, make me any steadier, or squeeze instead of snatch. For the price of a Zeiss I could buy a gun, scope, mounts, sling and ammo to sight in with and probably pocket some change.

I'm not goin' to waste my time arguin' with you.....I'm taking-off, early, today. Gonna go home and pin a target on the tree stump and brush-up on my trigger technique.
Unkljohn.....you and the Mrs. lay low for a little while this afternoon....don't want any stray bullets rainin' down over ya'lls way. I'll be done around 9:00.....just after the moon rises, tonight. I've already called Bo to let him know we ain't shootin' deer.

on what did yo base your comparison....do you have a Zeiss, too? I doubt it...your Dad chose the Simmons 'cause it was CHEAP! <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">quotethat Simmons out-performed the Zeiss and Swarovski greatly
What kinda IDIOT would do THAT? Who would believe such a story, especially considering the source? <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">quoteowner coulda easily sold my Dad the high-dollar Zeiss or Swarovinski, but wanted him to look through the Simmons
Maybe not, but that's irrelevant to your original quote about the "best low-light scope made". SHEESH! <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">quoteyou don't need this high-dollar equipment to kill a deer

Missing out on what? What could I possibly be missing by hunting with a Zeiss? I see the target, I see the crosshairs, I pull the trigger, the gun goes BANG!. Big deal!I'm telling you if you have never shot a gun using an Aetec, you're missing out.

The kick of the 7 Mag doesn't bother me not one bit, doesn't matter if it is pointed at a buck or a target. When you've been friends for over 25 yrs he's not going to BS you about a product. He's the same guy we went to about the 3.5" autos. If you go in there deadset on buying the SBE or a Swavorski or Zeiss scope, he'll sell it to you in a minute. All you have to do is ask about the Pro's and Con's, and he will tell you the truth. My dad did the scope test and he said the Simmons kicked the high dollar scopes booty by a great margin. It's my gun and my scope. And my dad didn't buy it just cuz it was cheap. When it comes to hunting he is going to buy what is the best peforming. The majority of you sporting clays shooters can take me on the shotgun ranges, but when it comes to rifle shooting, it's an entirely different story. The main factor is not performance, it's prestige. A lot of you feel you need to have the prestige of owning that $2000 shotgun or rifle, or that $1500 scope. Just cause it costs more doesn't make it better. You feel that you have to have that $2000 shotgun to kill ducks, knowing damn well you can go buy a $250 Rem 870 pump and kill the same amount of game, and that Rem will probably be more reliable in tough weather. Why go buy that high dollar equipment to hunt with??? It's called "Prestige", and I don't need that to hunt.

There AINT NO WAY I am gonna pump a bunch of groups through no 7mm mag. I can't afford another 10K of rebuilt shoulder. Be glad to shoot a 22-250. I used to like to shoot my friends bench rest gun before the range got shut down.
I will bring my 9mm so any of you pistol shooters can show me how to get it to feed better.
Regards,
GC
