Rifle Scope Questions...

GH22 - now I don't know you (other than what I see from posts on the forum), and I don't want to come across like a smark aleck with someone I don't know. I think I understand what you're getting at with your last point about the cost of piece of equipment vs. its function, and I think we'd all come to some sort of agreement about a shotgun killing a duck regardless of brand (I'm not trying to open the can of which is "best" and why). However, I can't help wanting to point out that a 7mm mag and a 3.5 inch 12 guage might also be seen as symbols of "prestige" in some people's eyes (i.e., might a 7mm mag be a bit overkill for most whitetail situations?) Just something to think about.

Good luck with this shooting contest. Sorry I won't be there to see it.

cmducks, I went to the Browning dealer to get a .280 Rem, not the 7 Mag. He didn't have any 280's and since the shells are so hard to find I decided to get the 7 Mag. In most hunting situations the 7 Mag is overkill, but I got tired of chasing and tracking ever deer I shot with a .243. Plus I do hunt in situations where I may shoot 200-300 yds. and need the higher caliber rifle. And I do see where you are coming from. I can see buying a gun for under $1000 with all accessories and I don't see that as prestige. What I am referring to is paying $2K-10K for a gun that you are just going to look at or baby it so much hoping that it won't get a scratch on it. When I buy a gun I am going to hunt with it in any type of situation imaginable.

I'm looking at the 3X9X50 Vari-XII Leopold for my 270 Remington 700ADL...any thoughts on the best low-light scope for the money? What is the difference between the VariXII and VariXIII? I was looking at the Nikon Buckmaster 3X9X50 and saw an ad for the Vari-X II for $269.00...thought that if I could get either the Nikon or the Leopold for the same amount of money, I would rather have the Leopold....Any info would be appreciated!

Guys,I just had to jump in on this one.I'm not a gun expert or anything,but i think when your're talking guns and scopes and all that,it's kinda like talking about men's briefs.Some of us wears Hanes and some of us wears Friut of the looms.My suggestion would be for you to try and pick a scope you think would best fit your budget and your hunting conditions.Personally,I shoot a Savage 110 30.06 with a Tasco 3x9x50 and have about $450.00 tied up in the whole package.Not an expensive package,but,most critters on the recieving end don't like it at all and that works for me!The other scopes mentioned are all good scopes,but,the Tasco is what i could afford and so far hasn't let me down.It has never fogged on me and with my eyesight,the crosshairs are great.So,pick a scope you think you will like.If I had the Money,think I might go with a Leupi.Just my $0.02 worth. I tell you what gh22.. My vari X II will do just as much as the atex... I for one imo think it is one of the better scopes on the market.. We aren't talking about using the one eyed hounddog with killing these deer.. talking about during legal shooting hours.. And the Simmons will NOT OUT DO the Vari X II, Vari X II or any of the other scopes metioned.. It is all in users pref...

I have a Vari X III 3.5 x 10 x 50 on my .270. I killed an eight point two years ago that I could just make out with my naked eye but once I put the scope up I could see plain as day and even judge his rack. This is one deer without the leupold I would not have gotten. For the money they are damn good scopes. And I would definatley get the 50mm objective for low light conditions, whether it be the Vari X II or III.

Vari-X 3 is supposed to have even clearer optics than the 2. Due to coatings I am told. I have two Redfield Illuminators and one Leupold Vari-X 3. The Redfields are a bit yellowish and the Leupold is much much clearer.

The first gun I shot was the Citori, the second gun was the Superposed, two entirely different shooting guns. And you know the reason why I shot the superposed, because the only shells I had left were the $10 High-Brass winchester shells and I didn't want to shoot them at the skeets.

I've got a variX 3 on my 7mm-08 that I really like. It is a terrific scope. I have shot a few bucks in low light conditions with it. The largest one, I couldn't tell what kind of rack it had until I looked through the scope, then it was obviously a shooter!!! I wouldn't trade it for any scope except maybe a $warov$ki. Not for prestige either, simply because it is a better scope! OK, this will put an end to this topic. How many of you Leupold owners have put your scope side-by-side with an Aetec in low light conditions? If you have not, then you can't honestly say that the Leupold pulls more light.
