Rifle Scope Questions...

Postby banded » Wed Oct 03, 2001 3:08 pm

Well matter of fact, I have. When I bought my Vari X II I was at the dealer and he had a gun stock with a piece mounted on the side that would hold two scopes.. One above the other and I did compare the two.. needless to say I have the Leopold on my gun...

Rifle Scope Questions...

I can't say that I've compared them side by side. BUT I've been using a Leupold scope(not the same scope) for 20 years and never have I seen a need for more light gathering capability than what a 50mm objective Leupold can do. At least not during legal shooting hours!
Now if I were shooting more than 30 mins after sunset...... Maybe I would need more light then, but that's against the law!!! Doesn't "pulling more light" have something to do with the size of the objective lense? If the the lense in the human eye is smaller than the lense in the scope, can more light come into the eye? Human eye lense's are appr. 50 mm.
A scope's value in low light conditions is based on the clarity and the size of the objective lense. The larger diameter lense allows more light to enter. It cannot transmit more light through the human eye than the size of the eye's lense will allow it to.

Prestige? Baby the high-dollar stuff? HA!

The rifle under that Zeiss is a pre-'64 Model 70 Featherweight .308 Win......they don't make'em anymore (like THAT). 'Paid $120 plus tax in 1963. I've got other rifles(and I occasionallly hunt with them) but that .308 is my favorite. I don't 'baby' ANY of them! I bought'em to SHOOT!

Oh, I could kill a deer with a $125 (insert your least desirable rifle that will actually discharge when fired, here) brand rifle. But over the years, I did without until I saved enough money to buy what I REALLY want......'cause that's what gives me pleasure......not settling for anything less than what I KNOW I'd be satisfied with. That's not prestige......that's PATIENCE!

There are still some guns I'd like to have and periodically, the list gets shorter (well, 'actually stays about the same, 'cause I keep adding to it). I'd love to have...

Parker 20ga DHE
Browning Superposed 3-gauge set in 'Diana' grade
Browning Superposed Waterfowl Series (matching serial #'s) three-gun set in Black Mallard, Mallard, and Pintail Edition
Win. Mod.70 'Supergrade' (pre-'64) in .270 Win
Browning 'Safari' grade FN in .270 Win
the list goes on......
I had the opportunity to buy the 'Waterfowl Series'.....why didn't I....it's not real practical for someone of my income, to buy something that I wouldn't dare do anything with, other than experiencing the joy of periodically admiring the quality and workmanship embodied in rare works of art such as this. (You just don't shoot guns like that)

I'm not real happy 'bout lettin' that set of guns go, but I AM thankful for what I DO HAVE and appreciate the sacrifice made to obtain it. That's not prestige.....that's GRATITUDE!

Don't begrudge me the joy of fine guns just cause you can't afford them, yet...I'm sure you will oneday. After all, aren't you the one always eager to shoot MY guns when we go out to the gun club? Am I not ALWAYS willing to share THAT 'thrill with you? It gives ME joy to see someone appreciate things like that. That's NOT 'prestige', my friend.....that's GENEROSITY! Watch yo mouth!

Sundown, tomorrow!

I wanted to shoot your over-and-under because I had never shot one before. That is the only reason why I wanted to.

Hey Chance, I think you better pull out your conversion tables and check that human lens diameter again. 2" is a pretty big eyeball.

Buy me one while you are at it crow!

I have a Leupold Var-X II on my .270. It is by far the best scope I have owned. It gathers light extremely well. Just my opinion though. Everyone has one.

Sorry, Unkljohn.....that musta been when that squadron of mosquitos flew up my left nostril , just prior to 'touch-off'. That'll really test your concentration!

'You gonna make it to the Club, either tonight or Saturday? I'd like to see the 'Merkel'.

What? You tryin' to back-out? (just kidding) Yeah, I was wondering what it would prove, too. Ain't much way to measure it other than compare each other's initial 3-shot groups (shot in daylight), with subsequent groups shot as light decreases. That's assuming that the group gets wider and more eratic with diminishing light. The guy with less variation in his groups between the two periods, has a better scope, theoretically ('cause he can still see the target). We would both have to be 'regular' bench rest shooters to lend merit to such an ordeal. I'm game!

However, I'm still bringin my rifle, and plan to shoot.....need to check it before deer season, anyway. Call me when you get loose. I gotta go to the house and get my 'stuff'. I still want to see the so-called "Best low-life,(I mean) low-light scope on the market"

If you'll look back....there probably isn't a post that I haven't edited. I edited the last one, cause I felt like I crossed the line......I regard you as a friend .....what I deleted may have led folks to believe, otherwise.

By the way...light is measured in lumens, not kilowatts. Just bring your eyeballs. What the hell does range have to do with it...you can either see the target, or you CAN'T. We're shooting at the same range and if you want, we'll shoot at the same magnification, unless you think THAT has something to do with light....which, by the way, it actually does. I see alot better on 4x than I do on 30x. Go Figure!

Most people don't realize the higher magnification you go up to, the darker the image gets. I
