Snakebite?

Postby GulfCoast » Sun Apr 13, 2008 7:41 pm

I think my dog lost a fight with a snake. Her foot is swollen something fierce, she will not put any weight on it, and it is warm to the touch. I cannot find any puncture wounds, and no "icky smell" but I dunno what else would make her foot swell like that. Off to the vet we go at the crack of dawn. Poor EM not a happy camper.

Feed her some bacon grease. If it is a snake bite the bacon grease will help counteract the venom from the bite

The only thing i can think of that would swell her foot is your foot stepping on her foot . :P :P

They can get a puncture wound between the pads from a splinter or something and it can be VERY difficult to locate.

To find the puncture from a snakebite you would probably have to shave the hair. The bacon grease is not a treatment I would count on to neutralize the venom. I would X ray the foot and leg to look for a fracture or foriegn body.

Hope everything works out....

"Interdigital abcess" of unknown origen. Theory is a sawgrass stem right smack in the gland opening. EM has a hole cut in her paw where it is draining, and she is licking the antibiotic ointment off as fast as I can put it on. B3, they did shave it and you could see a nasty puncture then. She seems to be feeling a little better, but is still doing the "3 legged hop." I hope the darn swelling goes down after the antibiotics kick in. Said it might take 7 to 10 days to get back to training. Bummer.

Get some self adhesive wrap at the store to keep her from licking off the antibiotic. Put a telfa pad at the spot of the abcess (to absorb the yucky stuff), then wrap the whole foot and all the way up the leg to keep her from licking. Either that, or make her wear a cone.
As far as the self adhesive wrap, you can get stuff called Vet Wrap from your vet, but you can find similar stuff at the grocery on the first aid aisle. I keep a couple of rolls of it in my doggie first aid kit.

If it is a bad abcess, I would be filling a syringe (w/out needle) and squirting chlorhexidene up in that opening to get all the infection out. Abcesses can be tricky to get rid of, especially when you don't know if the foreign body is out or not....
