she told me it was a short shaft, so i need to get figure out which one it is. if it turns out this is a long shaft, is it possible to make it fit a 15" trans, or would it beworth my time to just wait it out and find another motor that fits properly?

it looks like its a short shaft by lookin at the pics. but if it turns out toi be a longshaft the cheapest/easiest way to make it work is to build up your transom. shouldn't cost too much to get a welder to raise it up 4 inches.

BR549 said he thought it was a long shaft. I haven't had a reply yet from the seller to answer my question about the shaft.. i sure hope its a shorty, cause i'd love this motor... They listed it as a short shaft so we'll see..

I'm ready to get her out on the water and not worry about problems. with the 1977 35, i was just hoping she cranked with every turn of the key. and once she was running, how long would she run..

If your still talking about the motor in the pic listed above then it is a short shaft.

NO SIR 40 ELPTO 40 Horsepower, E stands for Electric Start, L stands for Long Shaft, PT stands for Power Trim, and O stands for Oil Injected. I sold these motors for years! It also does not have any clamp brackets to hold it to the transom. It must be bolted on. You cannot drill the hole in the proper place without a template and the knowhow to do it either. It must be mounted correctly or it will not run right!

You learn something new everyday. I've always wondered what those letters meant. :)

most 40 Hp's i see are long shaft.. would it be worth my time to get my trans raised, or just seek a lower HP and stick with the short shaft?

Very hard in the used catagory! To much weight and horsepower for that short of a transom. Remember everything is about liability nowadays!
You are comparing a '77 model 35 that was a crank rated motor to a 40 hp prop rated motor also. Plus you are adding trim and tilt. Lot's of weight there. That motor prolly weighs 170 lbs full of oil. Compare that to what you had maybe 90 lbs and not over 25 maybe 27 horses at the propshaft? Big difference!

If you know a reputable machine shop that does good heliarc work maybe. There again what about the rest of the boat? How high are the sides etc. etc. Lot's to consider here not to mention it ALL COST MONEY!

viewtopic.php?f=21&t=41759

thats the boat we bought.... the guys at the shop said a newer 25 HP would push my boat exactly the same as my 77 35hp. i wanted something with a bit more pop, like a 30 or 40. do i need to swallow my pride and get a 25? its rated for a 25, so a 40 is probably a bit much for it...

I'm not sure if I would give up on that idea just yet. Merc did make a lot of 30 hp in short shafts remotes. They also made quite a few 2cyl 40's in that same configuration without power trim. They were hot items in '99 and 2000. They were a good seller because of the price. Only difference in the two was the 30 had a throttle stop on it. Take it off and you had a 40. Your boat looks like it could handle either one of them. But the other with t&t would just be to heavy for it. Not to mention rare in a short shaft!

2 stroke all the way . . . a used omc motor will prolly be ok as long as its not oil injected. If it is dont buy it. I used to run a 40 merc on a 1542 but it was a stout built little boat.
