what about jack plates? would this help my cause any?
Re: Possible Outboard w/ pics
Jack plate would be a waste of money. 4 strokes were built after a boat like yours was designed. Therefore you would be back at the weight issue again. A boat needs to be somewhat balanced if you know what I mean. A good 3 cylinder Yamaha in a 25, 30, or even a 40, would probably work fine. Stay away from the 40 hp 2 cyl OMC. They did build a 30 hp for a number of years that was a good bit stronger than the motor you had. It was also the same size and weight as the one you had. Some of the parts on it were still the same all the way up untill they quit making it. Plus you controls would work on it too if they are still good. Nothing wrong with oil injection that's just a myth. Most problems with oil injection are self inflicted. (lack of maintenence) Oil pumps, (VRO pump on OMC's have to be changed about every 3 to 4 years. Oil lines on a merc or yamaha need to be changed every year or at least every other year. The get brittle and break. Because they are on the downside of the resevoir and ahead of the pump the oil warning system doesn't know it's not supplying oil to the engine till it's too late! I mean gee a 1 dollar piece of hose every year is nothing compared to a powerhead! Just common sense! Most people are oblivious to these things. They've never had to learn the mechanics of an outboard motor. A good dealer should inform them of these thing when they purchase a motor from them and make sure they understand maintenence. That's just a part of customer service. Unfortunately all to often it gets overlooked by both the deale and the consumer.

Ijust located a 1998 40hp evinrude short shaft for 1100. I would have to get it shipped from gulfport,fl to memphis,tn. I talked to a lady tonight, she asked me to call back tomorrow when her husband is home.would my current remote steer hook up to this motor? I know the wireharness is different, but the hydrolic steer cable? I feel good about this one. She also said it wan't electric start, but could easily be fitted with it. How cheap is easy???
