Mechanic Folks...I've gotta question

My 99 grand cherokee limited (v8) ran hot yesterday, light came on as I was pulling in the garage. I am thinking the thermostat is not working, but who knows. My first step is going to be replacing it. I have never worked this thing, and don't knwo much about it.

Question: Where is the thermostat? I saw a diagram that showed it in the inlet grommet near the bottom of the engine block. This is unlike my past experience with most every other car I have owned, where the thermostat is under the neck grommet on top of the engine.

Is this correct? is it on the bottom? That means I have to drain the entire cooling system to change it....uuuhhhhggggg

Most of the time it's like your talking about on top the engine but these day's ya never no. If it was a ford i could help ya . The thermestat maybe somewhere under it though like your describing, seeing more of that these day's.

The thermostat should be where your upper radiator hose connects to the engine block..

i am gonna guess that this diagram was drawn on either monday or friday,although i could be wrong. why in the world would the thermostat by on the hose going back to the radiator??
i agree with cwink.....it should be under the neck where the top rad.hose connects to the block.

I had a problem with the sensor that sends the info to the gauge. However, that was a 6 cyl. It showed various readings at times, even though nothing was wrong. Cost about $14.00

If I am not mistaken I believe the radiator in this truck flows in at the top and back into the block at the bottom.

I assume that this engine has an electric fan? Is it functioning properly? I would check it first before I drained the antifreeze.

If you have to drain the radiator make sure you take the plug out of the top water inlet. If not the block will not fill up correctly.

Clutch fan. Surprised me too. Otherwise these things are built pretty well for offroad use. 4wd is awesome and will send power to the wheel that needs it, and skid plates thoughout...it is a neat truck, until you have to work on it!!

They crammed a big booty motor in a little bitty spot.

I just got the skid plate off, no I am waiting on the block to cool down enough to drain it.....
