Burning Millet???

Postby volguy » Mon Aug 25, 2003 11:51 am

Can someone please advise me the best way to burn millet? Should I bush hog it and then burn it or should i burn it standing? Logic tells me to burn it after bush hogging it, but some guys in our dove club are saying that we should burn it standing.

If at all possible you should burn it standing. I always brown mine with a herbicide and then put the fire to it. If it has green left in it at all your burn won't be as effective and therefore the ground won't be as clean like the doves like it. I suppose you could mow it but that creates clumps of vegetation that, although they would be brown, they still have the capacity to hold moisture and slow down your fire. It's kinda like burning leaves in the fall, air can't get underneath the pile and the leaves on the bottom don't burn. Burn it standing if you can, you'll have better luck.
