no but at the very least the dog needs to be put down...if not it will always pose a threat or risk

plus there is no way I could continue to own or care forthe dog knowing what had transpired

I certainly agree.

Most dogs don't bite and hold on till death.. That is what the Pit Bull breed was designed to do.. Labs have been designed to hold on gently...

The difference is instinct and cabability..

1) The dog must be put down immediately as it is a viscious dog.
2) The dog owners must be charged with negligence and legally banned from ever owning a pitt bull again. (They can't care for it and train it properly, therefore they should not have one.)
3) The teenage babysitters should be brought up on child endangerment charges for not having a 3 yo toddler in bed before 9:00 p.m.
4) The City of Jackson Police Department must improve the firearms training for all police officers. If they are given a firearm, and are expected to use it, then by God they better be able to use it effectively. If they cannot kill a pitt bull that is CHAINED UP AND STILL ATTACKING THEIR FELLOW OFFICERS, then what good is having a sidearm? It ain't there for decoration.

They DID shoot at the dog several times but they only hit the dog once in the leg. The other bullets richoched (sp) off the concrete and into the side of the neighbor's house!!! They, the JPD, need to be trained HOW to shoot their firearms. I agree, the dog should be put down immediately. He should have been euthanized on site in my opinion. But they should definitely not leave it locked up in a kennel suffering with a gunshot wound while they conduct an investigation. I mean, are they planning on questioning the dog, or what????

They were prolly no swimmers meaning they threw their guns up side ways to try and shoot the dog. someone needs to show them that the sites are on the top of the gun....also this just goes to show you exactly why they come out at night like peepee roaches, because they start off at a young age running around in the late hours of the night.... i dont personally think the owner should have any charges the parents should and the dog should be put down just due to the fact i hate all pits

Blame the parents all the way.

Yeah I would still see it the same regardless of the breed. It is the responsibility of the owner to keep their pets under control regardless of where they are. Many of you will remember my yellow lab Gunner, He bit two people and was a great dog most of the time. I never gave him a chance to bite three with a simple 22 to the head. I remember some of you going off on me when I put him down and I would be willing to bet that you would have put me down again had I not and he did something like this.

The parents of the child are also to blame. What was a child that age doing out at 9:00 without an adult supervising him? There is enough blame to go around.

The difference in a pit and other dogs is the fact that a pit kills. You hear about pits killing people all the time. You never hear about a poodle killing someone.

The PARENT (not the PARENTS) is to blame due to one being in Parchman.

Next there is NO way the mother did not know the neighbor had a pit for the sole purpose of keeping thugs away from his property where he had numerous items stolen.

Why do you allow a 3 yr old to be supervised outside by 10 other children while you are inside supposedly watching another child, then tell the media "all my child wanted to do was play with that dog". WTF you knew it was a pit and a guard dog don't twist this to look like the dog F&^ked up.

By law the dog doesn't have to be put down since the child was unattended and the dog was CHAINED not running loose and rampid. The owner has already stated he doesnt want the dog anymore and told officers to just shoot it when they came but they can't hit anything!!!!

How does a dog charge you and you know its chained????

Not sure if any of you remember but years back a JPD officer shot a beagle he said charged him.

Sad story all around for both sides but having a 3 yrd old on the loose is no better than that dog being on the loose. The mom is more worried about daddy bhtats in jail not being able to attend the funeral of the child that SHE left unattended and it wasn't just for a few minutes. I wonder how this story would play out if if a car would have hit him???

I am so tired of unresponsible people (jacksonians) mostly blaming JPD etc for things like........ not long ago a thug carjacked an elderly lady and was later apprehended and they got a little rough..... of course they interviewd mom on cam and she was so mad at JPD for beating up her child. WHATEVER.

Or the lady that left her kids alone to got to the bar and they burned up but lets not forget she was going to the bar to get food for them.

I still say this wasn't the dogs fault. You can't blame a dog for doing what it was bred to do. The dog was chained up, and protecting his owners property. Granted it is different, but for me it is much the same as my lab picking up ducks it is something they were bred to do. I say the dog should be allowed to live with restrictions, i.e. a muzzle when outside the house.

No matter what, there is no easy awnser.

On another note. As for pits being horrible man eating beasts, they are not. If any of you have followed the dogs Vic had taken from him most have been rehabilitated and are as sweet and loving as can be with a few exceptions. Heck even mr dog whisperer himself has a BIG pit as his sidekick to help with problem dogs and he never growls or attacks any1. Problems are with the OWNERS. I guarentee you more people have been bitten by a freaking cocker spaniel or a lap dog like a chi wa wa!!! My old girlfriends grandfather had a fiest/heeler mix and he would wait for you under the car in the carport and when you took that first step to open the door WHAMMMM he would try and rip your achelles off. I would hate to know how many he got but he only got me once...... i got him one once to when gramps was gone one day as well.

Let's let all the antis (of the breed) read all this again.

@work wrote:I read where the owner actually asked the police officers to kill the dog right after it happened but they did not.

Also read where the mother looked out and saw that some other kids were outside with her 3 year old and "assumed" he would be OK. There really were not any "babysitters".

Also, the father is in prison.

Why would you assume that your 3 yr old is being watched by a bunch of other kids and what was it doing out at 9pm.

The owner had it chained inside his carport due to several thefts that had occurred.

There are a lot of other factors that played a part in this kids death other than just the dog....not that I'm defending the dog.

Lets do a little research as to what the breed was developed for and why. Satisfaction of a sick desire of man to fight dogs. In my opinion a terrible thing to do.

But, there is a but of course, if you do a little research you will find that a dog that appeared (during the course of a fight) to want out of that "pit" by turning away from the other dog was judged to have "turned" and must be picked up by its handler.

Who would breed or feed a dog that would bite a human for this very reason?

A dog, any dog, can be MADE mean and TAUGHT to be aggressive towards people. ANY DOG.

It's exactly like the people that think that gun's kill and not murders.
At times there is not a satisfactory substitute for well-aimed lead going down range at high velocity.

Pitbulls suck but this was the fault of the individual responsible for the child. If your child was to wander into my house I have a cat that will also attack. Bad deal but a lot of weight must be put on the shoulders of whoever was SUPPOSED TO BE responsible for the child. Again bad deal, if it was any other breed , people would not be coming down on the dog.......my .02.

Gotta get my in .02........This is simply a tragic accident, however.....

1st....Were dealing with an animal and we will never fully understand what is going on inside their minds. Plain and simple. Pit Bulls or Daschunds....trained or untrained.

2nd....Any parent who lets their 3yr old child play in their yard or the nieghbors yard at 09:00 pm with out adult supervision should be reported to DHS.....this is 2008 not freaking 1962.

3rd.....The dog owner has an obligation to his neigborhood to attempt to provide a safe environment for the public however he chooses to detain his animal whether it is by city animal laws or what have you.

4th and final....The dog should be put down just to prevent this tragedy from happening again. If I owned any breed of dog that mauled and killed a human, 3yrs to 30yrs, it would be the right thing to do...IMO.

Personally I hate the breed in question and would never own one, there is some truth as to how they are trained, but you can train a bear to be in the circus and do tricks, but he will still go back to his animalistic traits and behaviors always. He's an animal.

Also this type of chit would never happen to someone on this board because most or all of us have some sense of family values and responsibilities that would never allow this incident to take place.

Hey, Irongrip, if you really did your research, you would have read that the opposite owner had to wash down the opposing dog before a fight. This was to insure that there were not chemicals in the dog's coat to deter the other dog from winning. The dogs were bathed several times. Also, the handlers were required to be in the pit with the dogs, sometimes laying right beside the dogs. The dogs were bred to be DOG aggressive, not HUMAN aggressive.

In my opinion, the mother should be arrested for neglegance. This is no different than the stories you hear of 5 kids burned up in a house when momma snuck out to go to a juke joint. Why would you let a 3 year old wander around un supervised?????

Go figure the father is in prison...... my gracious.

The paper said the man that owned the dog, got th edog because he was tired of getting robbed. He had the dog chained up to deter would be thieves. He's tired of his stuff getting stolen, hell, I can't blame him for protecting his property.

Arrest the momma and throw the damn book at her. PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITY!!!!

Again.. Plenty of blame to go around.. But this is an easy fix..

Make a law that states all dogs have to adequatly contained by a fence.
