Dove Hunting Dogs

Just a reminder guys, leave a black lab at home on a 90 degree afternoon of dove hunting. When they overheat, they are gone. Give it just a few weeks and we will have cooler weather for them to hunt. Take them in the morning, or leave them at home when it's hot like this.

Thats why you hunt with a blue heeler they can handle the hot weather.

Having not ever owned a black lab what happens when the overheat? I'd guess they start to get real weak and lethargic.

They don't give much sign of getting weak. That is what can be dangerouse about having them in the heat too long. They will go until they can't go any more.

I would not take any dog on a hot sunny afternoon dove hunt. They are fine to throw a couple of dummies to, but a 2 or 3 hour hunt is taking a chance on overheating a dog. Bankermane has a pretty good idea too.

Kinda conditioning rule. If you train in the heat and your dog is not an inside dog and does not suffer from EIC your lab should be ok if you use some common sense. Plenty of water a little shade if possible. They are only picking up 15 birds. Mine picked up that many and more on Sat but don't expect much if you don't train etc. I see it every year at at least one dove hunt. You have "that" gut how says he has a jam up retreiver and will get anything. Boy when they see one actually NOT breaking and running afoull of everyone and messing up your "trained" dog they get a tast of what it is supposed to be like. Had a guy sitting by me one year that had a lab that would get all the birds I shot before my dog had the chance and he got such a kick outta his dog beat my dog to the bird. I moved shortly as my dog had enough of being the "honor" dog.

Heat stroke untreated in a timely manner = dead

I would not recomend taking one out in the afternoon whatever the color it is unles it is late in the season and the weather is much cooler. I picked up one of lilwhitelie's dog from the last litter and he exceeded all expectations. He is a little over 8 months and he retrieved all 15 birds on command. I started him out on a leash and slowly worked him into it without the leash. Never broke without my command. I can not wait forduck season look like I have a new hunting companion

I agree, no sense in hurting a good dog for a couple of birds. I did take mine Sat morning but she laid around that afternoon as I figured she had already done enough hunting for the day. This is her first year hunting and she did great, only question is how do i get her to follow my gun better. I had to basically send her on a blind retrieve for every bird she got because she would not see it fall. Luckily she did great but it would have been much easier if she had been paying closer attention... Any thoughts.

I hunt my choc in the afternoon only if the area is very shaded.
