Baby Monitors

Postby Ducklord » Tue Sep 16, 2008 1:24 pm

My wife and I went to Baby'sRUs to register the other day, and we looked at baby monitors. Well, there is like a million of them out there, so need some suggestions as to which ones work the best. I like the ones where you can actually see the baby on the monitor. Any suggestions?

Also, any other things that is a "must have" that I may not know I need, will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Lots of diapers. When you think you have enough, then buy some more.

IMHO i would invest in one that had the tv monitor on it. we used to have just the sound one and we kept running in thinking something was wrong every time our son grunted. then we were given the one with the video output and absolutley loved it. we could be out in the yard and still be able to watch our son while he was asleep in his bed.

We got one of the video monitors for a gift and almost took it back because I thought it would be a waste. It was about $200 and i thought of all the other stuff that I could buy with that money.

Wife talked me into keeping it and she was right. That thing is great. i dont' know the brand right now but it has a 7" flat screen monitor and i would buy a new one tomorrow if it broke.

Just my 2 cents

I'm sure that baby monitor technology has changed a lot since we used one & this is not really answering your question, but one pretty cool thing about the standard ones is that if you turn the transmitter off, you can intercept cordless phone call conversations near your house. Yep - we discovered (by accident) that our neighbor was a bona fide lezbo!

You really dont need the video, yes its nice but we have one that basically a small speaker receiver. It runs off batteries or you can plug it in to a wall outlet. We just had our 2nd child and I think we used it for about a month or so, and now he can wake me up if im at the other end of the house when he is just chatting away. The place where you will save money is at Sam's, if you plan on using formula, also you would probably be better off investing in a baby swing than a monitor anyways.

Both of mine were premies so needless to say we were very apprehensive. We found a monitor that had a mat that sensed the movement of the baby from breathing. If it sensed no motion for something like 15 or 30 seconds that thing would sound an alarm like there was no tomorrow. It worked great, we never had any real scares. Once you get it set you get great piece of mind, it also has a regular sound monitor on it.

I slept alot more soundly, when I got to sleep, knowing that if something went wrong the monitor would go off.

This may be OT but the thing that has come in the most handy to me is one of the Boppy(sp) pillows, I know they are supposed to be for breast feeding but you can lay the baby on there to give him/her a bottle and it doesnt wear out your arm and it give you a hand to work the remote control which is vitally important to keep you sanity.

+1 on the diapers.

Dont get a diaper genie!!! if your wife thinks you have to have something like this they make one that will take wal mart bags instead of the 7dollar diaper genie refills. We had a genie and used it for awhile but I refuese to buy more refills. We keep a garbage can just for diapers upder out carport(open not inclosed) and throw the diapers in it. I take it off every few days. As far as a monitor goes we had an expensive one from Babies R US and it quit so we bought a cheap one at Wal Mart and it does jsut fine.

I would have never looked at this thread until having a little one a year ago, but here it goes....

Get a bumbo seat. It is great for feeding the baby when they get old enough for baby food or putting them in there for a few minutes to run out of the room for something. It is made out of a light rubber material and they can not get out of the seat by design.

Couple of friends of mine that recently had their first kids say batteries and diapers are the two main things you need to stockpile or request as gifts.

Those video monitors are great. You can even add a booster so you can take the monitor to the bar with you!

So I'm told.
