Teal in Venice, LA

Postby Caller1 » Sun Sep 28, 2008 1:55 pm

Went this past Wed- Thurs. Really great fellowship, but more of a road trip than a hunting trip.. Did kill teal, just not like it shoulda been due to Gustav and Ike. Ike busted a levee down there that flooded a bunch of land.

Write this down.... Likely that in our lifetime that that peninsula will be lost. The marsh is fading QUICKLY. From the overpass in Burras you can barely see any islands or vegetation due to Ike.

Belive it or not, the marsh in places is in better shape than I could have ever imagined after two storm surges. I have coverd over 400 miles in my boat this teal season down there looking to see how things look. There are many areas that are just wiped out, bout as bad as they can be. However I have found no less than 10 spots that are just as lush as they could be and are full of ducks. In fact, we had one of our better teal seasons this year.

One day you guys are gonna learn to let me know when you come down to hunt there. We had 20 at the camp Wed night for a crab boil, and 75 over on Thur night for fish, gator tail, and frog legs. You missed a hell of a party, and all you had to do is let a brother know you were invading my neck of the woods.

Jeff, I'm not saying your not right, BUT there is some burned up chit down there! There are ACRES and Acres that are gone since Ike, Gustav, and without saying, Katrina. I understand that it was looking really good, but my eyes saw the salt damage and didn't see the huge flocks of teal my minds eye had created.

Also saw some wigeon grass spots that was making it just fine, so should be some spots that may really concentrate the big ducks later.

But I am no expert at all in that part of the world , AT ALL. Couldn't be much further from it. I promise that you the Jedi, and I am but a young patawan! I appreciate the mention of all the good eats, and I do know y'all are experts in that.

No doubt there is plenty ruined stuff down there. However through LOTS of scouting, I have found a few areas that seemingly were spared down there, and I expect until get eaten out will hold a few birds. But for the most part the marsh is toast down there.

Teal were very odd as I expect this year. However we managed to have a few good hunts, we ened up killing 72 this season which is way below our norms, but storms will do that. We had three hunts where we killed 16 or more, and one hunt where we could have shot teal until we couldn't pull the trigger anymore. However those birds were gone the next day. It was a VERY odd season to say the least.

No that's incorrect, I would say there were closer to thousands in the flooded cow pastures. I know I stopped and took pictures of one guys house that had water up to the steps. He was obviouly feeding them, and there had to be at least 200 just at his door step!! Talk about a skillet shot!!

Good to have you aboard Mr. Ozone. Where are you from? I grew up in River Ridge. Give a hollar on ch. 67 VHFto the US Corps of Engineers, US Dredge Wheeler if you see us down at the Head Of Passes or down SW Pass! Ask for Joe Mitchell. We are dredging off Pilottown as I type this.
