My Glock 19 with light and laser is locked and loaded in a lock box with keyed entry in the nightstand beside our bed. The box has a safety feature on it where if someone enters the wrong code, the electronics shut down for like 30 minutes and it can't be opened. That keeps the kids safe and insures I'm the only one to get to it.

Re: What handgun???
If you are leaning towards a Glock-style, you need to shoot one first. Because of the safety, the trigger pull is more like a double action pistol that a single action. The grip on a double-stack 9mm is much thicker than the single stack 1911 style .45
When my kids were younger, I kept a 1911 in the side table, full magazine but none in the chamber. Reasoning was many. Slide was too tight for them to work the action and put on in the chamber. And if they did happen to do that, they couldnt depress the grip safety and reach the trigger at the same time. And you can also have the safety engaged at all times.
A Glock is designed to keep loaded... and the only true safety is on the trigger.
Someone walks into my house, I work the action as I pick up the pistol...
Its pretty quick, and it lets them hear that I have a weapon.

Sometimes you just have to close your eyes, count to ten, take a deep breath and remind yourself that you wouldn't look good in prison stripes... and just smile at that dumbass and walk away.

Re: What handgun???
Some of you guys really need to re-evaluate your decisions and logic regarding personal and home safety. How many of you practice waking up from a dead sleep in a dark room and opening your lock box? Add the stress and adrenaline dump that will take place in a situation where someone is in your home and that simple task of unlocking a box can become very difficult and possibly give the bad guy time to get you or a family member. I am no professional by any means but I believe people should take SMART steps to protecting your family and yourself.
First thing is don't trick yourself into believing your safe at home because your in the country. Being in the country means less neighbors to call the cops in the eyes of a thug. You need to get a concealed weapons permit issued by the state and take defending your life seriously. Get a good gun and holster and carry your gun. The first rule to winning a gun fight is to have a gun. Just because you are in the country doesn't mean you are invisible to bad guys. You are more isolated and that is appealing to them.
Second of all, Find the right gear and practice. Find a gun that you are comfortable with and shoot! Practice drawing while sitting down, laying down, from behind cover, etc. practice reloading magazines in the dark and while moving to another weapon (rifle or shotgun in house). Practice shooting in low light and no light (with aide of flashlight). For a good all around gun, the Glock 23 in .40 SW is very hard to beat IMO. It is compact and easily concealed with a tshirt and you have 14 rounds of .40SW. I carry a glock 23 with crimson trace laser grips and night sights. For home defense I keep a glock 20C 10mm next to my bed with a streamlight TLR flashlight on it.
The next thing is using your head. You are not a swat team. Do not put yourself in potentially bad situations. If something doesn't feel right at the gas station, go to another one. If you get home and your door is opened, call the cops you shouldn't clear the house by yourself unless absoloutely have to. Be aware of your surroundings and you will avoid a lot of dangerous situations.
Lastly, get the mindset that you may have to take someones life to save your own. If you can't pull the trigger don't carry a gun. You are putting yourself and whoever is with you in more of a risk by hesitating. I for one pray I never have too pull my gun because taking a human life is the absolute last resort.
I'm sorry for the rant but I don't like seeing people with such a false sense of security. I am no professional by any means like I mentioned earlier in these posts and these post are just my observations and opinions. If you need a gun, you more than likely won't be at home or in the truck so why limit protecting yourself to those areas?
I refuse to be a victim.
(sorry for the bad spelling and/or grammar, I used my phone to write the response. I will try to proof read and correct it later on.)

Re: What handgun???
The best gun is the one you are carrying at the time...if a gun is outside arms reach and requires "unlocking" to get to it is almost useless IMO.... as for kids, that isn't easy, I keep my house gun "put up" out of their reach unless I'm sleeping in my bedroom, and my kids won't get my CCW gun off me without me knowing it.... I used to worry about 9mm, 40, 45...but the truth is I found a gun that I could carry comfortably and then picked the best loads.... I'd rather be holding a 9mm than trying to get to my 45.....

Re: What handgun???
Chevy is exactly right!!!!!! Practice, practice, practice and be prepared. If you can put a weapon in every room if possible. I've got one in every room at my house and some I've got two and god forbid I'm given the chance or time to get to my room, then its gonna get ugly!!! But if not I've got enough fire power to still take out at least 5 people depending on how many rounds I gotta use. Like Chevy said being out in the country just makes it easier for them to come in with no witnesses. JUST BE PREPARED FOLKS!!!!!!!!

SHOOTER UP!!!!!

Sawed off double-barrell.
Re: What handgun???
sig .45 never cared for never fails. not sexy, but very quick and very light weight. the p220 fits a ladies hand well and the action is easy.
a gun in hand is better than twenty on the shelf....
kids or locks ..... ?
I got a cranky ole dog because I knew he was more reliable than a security system in most cases and would buy some time if I needed it. he gets upset I check it out no matter what it is or what time it may be .
I grew up forty minutes from fresh milk, and I can remember some of the worst stories of our times being told when I was young. I won't repeat them here. I have neighbors that leave the keys in the cars to keep them from coming in to get them .

And then Cousin Eddie says to Clarke "I don't know why they call this stuff hamburger helper, I think it does just fine by itself, Give it a try Clarke"
