Wore em' Out in Oklahoma

Wish you MS boys luck.....If our opener in NE OKlahoma was any indicator of what you guys should have in a couple week you are in for a treat. Opening day our hunting party of 6 killed 36 ducks pretty easily and were selective with a mixed bag of Mallards, Gads, and Wigeon. Birds have been on the move thru NW Ark/ NE OK headed south for about 2 weeks seeing lots and lots just about every day.

Oh, and I must add that this is on public waterway/lake.

Oklahoma Waterfowl Report for November 5, 2003

Northwest
Canton: Lake elevation is 3.5 ft. below normal. Habitat conditions on the
lake are poor. The water level has dropped below the vegetation level. Winter wheat is in good condition. Duck numbers are good and goose numbers are low. Hunter activity is low and success is moderate. Significant duck and goose movements into and through the area have occurred during the past 12 to 24 hours.

Ft. Supply: Lake elevation is 2003.42, .58 feet below normal. Habitat conditions are good. Local winter wheat is good to excellent and native plants around the lake are fair. Duck and goose numbers are good. Hunter activity is low and success is good. Both duck and goose movement was good this past weekend. Sandhill crane movement has been fair but most are not stopping.

Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge: No Report.

Washia National Wildlife Refuge: No Report.

Southwest
Ft. Cobb: Lake elevation is 1340.33, 2 feet below normal. Habitat conditions are fair. Local winter wheat is fair/good, peanuts in various stages of harvest and some standing milo. Duck and goose numbers are low. Bird movement has been slow, but a few mallards have moved in.

Hackberry: 240 acres is currently flooded. Habitat conditions are good. Pigweed and wild millet are flooded. Duck numbers are fair. No geese are present. Bird movements are picking up with each cold front.

Mtn. Park: Lake elevation is 1404.1, 6 feet below normal. Habitat conditions around the lake are fair. Wetland units are not flooded due to low lake level. Will be flooded as soon as conditions will permit. Duck and goose numbers are low. No bird movement.

Waurika: Lake level is 948.36, 3 feet below normal. Habitat conditions around the lake are fair. Wetland units are not flooded due to low lake level. Will be flooded as soon as conditions will permit. Duck and goose numbers are low. A few sandhill crane are passing through, otherwise very little bird movement.

Northeast
Chouteau: All units are full. Habitat is good. Duck numbers are moderate. Goose numbers are low. Bird movement into the area has been good and should increase with the cool front.

Copan: Lake elevation is normal 710.12. Habitat conditions are good. Flooded smartweed and millet in marshes. Five marshes are 50% flooded. Winter wheat is fair. Duck and goose numbers are low. Some snow geese have been observed moving south.

Deep Fork National Wildlife Refuge: All wetlands are less than 50% full. Habitat conditions are fair to good. Duck numbers (918) are low, most are wood ducks. Goose numbers (8) are very low.

Eufaula: Lake elevation is 581.36, 3.64 feet below normal. Habitat conditions are good, but essentially unavailable at present lake level. Duck numbers are low and no geese are present. Some hunter activity was observed over the weekend youth season, but articipation and success is unknown. No bird movements.

Ft. Gibson: Lake elevation is 1/2 ft. below normal. Habitat is good. Duck numbers are good and goose numbers are low. Bird movement has been good and should increase with the cold front.

Hulah: Lake elevation in normal 733.35. Habitat conditions are fair. Little flooded vegetation in the lake, some flooded moist soil plants in marsh unit. Local winter wheat is good. Local milo and soybean fields have been cut. Duck and goose numbers are low. Some snow geese have been observed moving south.

Kaw: Lake elevation is 1009.06. Habitat conditions are excellent. Good quantities of millet and natural vegetation are gradually being inundated. Duck and goose numbers are excellent. Major migration has occurred since the last survey. Good numbers of snow geese and white fronted geese are being observed moving through the area. A significant number of mallards are utilizing the area.

Keystone: Lake elevation is 722.25 (.75ft. below normal). Cottonwood Creek WDU and Three Mile Slough are in good condition. The remainder of sloughs and flats are poor due to summer water storage in the lake and current lake levels. Good amounts of millet are flooded at Cottonwood Creek and Three Mile Slough. Other locations have fair amounts of natural foods and millet. Duck numbers are fair and goose numbers are low.

Oologah: Lake elevation is 640.17. Habitat conditions are fair. Native plants around the lake and moist soil plants in the Overcup Bottoms. Local winter wheat is fair and some milo fields have been cut. Duck and goose numbers are low. There are a small number of birds using the Overcup Bottoms. Bird movement has been slow this week.

Sooner: Lake elevation is 1 foot above normal. Habitat conditions are good. Local winter wheat is good. Duck numbers are fair mostly gadwall with a mix of other puddle ducks and divers. Goose numbers are fair with a mix of migrant light geese and white fronts that will not stay long. Some resident Canadas are present. Large migration occurred beginning about October 31 through November 2.

Webbers Falls: Units are 1/3 full. Habitat is good. Duck numbers are fair to good. Goose numbers are low. Bird movement has been and good and should increase with the cold front.

Southeast
Hugo: Lake is 1 ft. below normal. Habitat conditions are poor. No crops are available. Japanese millet is fair. Duck and goose numbers are low. No hunting activity. Bird movements are slow and scattered. Little River National Wildlife Refuge: Water level is low across the refuge. Habitat conditions are fair/good along edges of aquatic wetlands.
Submerged aquatics good in areas where there is standing water. Duck numbers (173) are low. No geese are present.

Red Slough: A good rain is needed to increase water levels on the area. Moist soil plants, milo and Japanese millet are all good. Duck numbers are improving but there are no big concentrations yet.

Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge: No Report
Texoma: Lake elevation is 612.9, lake needs to rise 2 1/2 ft. to flood available vegetation. Japanese millet, smartweed and nut sedge are all good. Duck and goose numbers are poor. A good rain is needed.

Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge: No Report.

Wister: Lake elevation is 477.40, about 7 feet below normal. Habitat conditions are poor on the lake due to low water levels and fair on the WDU. Duck and goose numbers are low. Most of the ducks are using the WDU. Bird movement has been slow.
