I saw.......
  • Opening Day - one idiot riding around in his mud barge from 6:30 to 7:30 looking for a place to set-up. We had birds working both times he came by us, but they flared off.
  • Saturday - another idiot riding around scouting @ 9:00 and locked-in on my goose spread. ('Guess we were hidden pretty-well.)
  • another party started toward our spread then realized they were decoys.
  • gadwalls that make one pass and land 200 yds out in open water (nothin' new)
  • mostly ringnecks
  • people riding around in the dark with no running lights
  • Folks at public ramp in chest waders, where all the surrounding land is private
  • 2 old gentlemen who said their wives went shopping at Wal-Mart (Friday) - so they decided to go fishing
  • an absolutely unbelievable piece of 13-year-old dog work.....10 minute trail of a 2-hour-old scent through water hyacinths, snags, logs, vines, then nabbed the cripple after crashing through a thick cane brake......no signals, no commands, no help.....just pure nose, heart and desire. That made my whole weekend. She slept under the sheets that night.
  • an osprey
  • a thousand commorants
  • a woodcock (@ 10 feet)
  • one greenhead working to my call - and watching my wife make him come apart at close range
  • set-up in wrong spot on a 'cold' hunt (un-scouted).....just on a hunch - ended-up with 7 birds.
  • Scouting just before the wrap-around moisture hit......and finding a couple of limits of fatheads.
  • making it back to the landing and loaded-up just as the bottom fell-out

Overall, a pretty-good 4 days.

'Am in the market for a surplus anti-tank rocket launcher and a crate of armor-piercing incindiary rounds to rid the waters of 'Pro-Staffer wanna-be's' that are more interested in riding around than hunting 'til a respectable hour. I just want to be left alone. If folks can't tell the difference between decoys and real birds on water @ 1/4 mile - they need to get a cheap pair of binoculars.

Up here in extreme NE MS...

Opening day... 1 stinkin hood
Friday...nothin
Saturday...1 woodie, 1 black duck...earliest in the season that I've ever taken one.
Sunday...few woodies and ringnecks.

Overall one of the slowest opening weekends I've had, even considering my location.

About all I can say is I didnt get shut over 3 days of hunting! Shot a couple each day......about par for the course for my openers.....I never have much luck in November but starting about the second weekend of December is when it really kicks in gear for me.
