Re: State's New Coach Is...
I am a proud graduate of Mississippi State and I enjoyed my college years in Starkville and would love to do it all again.
The worst thing about Starkville is the name "Starkville." We know the town was named after the Stark family, but to some other people , its a joke. For example:
If Stark = barren, desolate,
And Ville = place of,
then Starkville = barren place of desolation.
The national media (ESPN, others) love to make fun of Starkville. Potentially, some recruits, coaches (and their wives), and others hear the name "Starkville" and associate it with the subconcious mental image it connotates, and dismiss us out of hand.
Lets petetion to change the negative name of Starkville to something else - something more positive, or at least neutral.
Of course, I could be wrong.

You are correct sir, It was called Boardtown, I am not sure that was the official name but apparently that is how it was known.
Starkville has gotten kind of a bum rap from the national media. ESPN did rank it as the worst college town in the nation tied with Wacko, TX a few years ago. But coming from a rebel, the town aint all that bad even if msu is there

FYI
Starkville, originally founded as "Boardtown" in the early 1830's, was in 1835 named in honor of General John Stark, a hero of the American Revolutionary War.
The name "Boardtown" is still often heard in Starkville today. Several businesses still use it in their names. It was originally used as a name for the settlement (present day Starkville) with a lumber mill that produced clapboards. Those same boards were used in the town's first homes and structures.
Where'd who go?
