What's the oldest banded duck anybody's killed?

Postby Mississippi20 » Wed Dec 17, 2008 10:21 pm

Just wondering....Killed a greenhead that was banded in North Dakota in 1995. That's 13 years old. Anybody got any that were older?

29 years and two months. wingman wrote an article on it last year. Second oldest duck ever killed. A canvasback that was 29 and six months was older.

This doesn't directly address the question but a friend of mine killed a snow goose in S TX last year that was banded in far northern Canada 18 years earlier.

Snow geese aren't as tasty as mallards though.

I got one that was 13 years old or older. They could not read the rest of the numbers.

I got info from a band on a 14 year mallard drake I killed a few years back, and I didn't believe that data was for real until I heard about Wingman's 29 year old last year.

I know this thread is about oldest banded ducks, but it reminded me of a hunt about 25 years ago. We were either hunting Flag lake or Broad lake, I can't remember. An older guy in our party killed a banded GWT drake. Back then, I think you had to write and mail in the info and then wait on them to mail it back to you. When he got it back, they told him that the bird was banded in Illinois the day before he killed it. I always knew they were fast, but......
