Hunting a four year old
Hunting a four year old
It is starting to get a little frustrating when you know there are mature deer on your hunting ground and you hunt your butt off and still cannot see one that is four years old or older. Even when you let the two and three year olds walk and they make it through the season, it will still be hard to see that same deer next season. When a buck in North Mississippi gets above 3 years old he turns into a total different animal. I hope the next two weeks will make the big ones move.

Couldn't have said it better. I assume they just turn nocturnal. It's almost as if they don't even want to breed. I can't tell you the number of deer I have passed up in the last 10-15 years saying, "he'll be a good deer next year". They are HAAARD to kill at that age.
Why is my mouth so dry this morning, when I drank so much last night?
Re: Hunting a four year old
Howd that goose hunt go the other day? I had them drunks the night before with the deer all shot to hell

I saw an expert on deer that said once they get that age they move to different territory. Thats just what he said. I think if they'ere really not pressured they'll stay where they are. my 2 cents

I hear ya deredwine....its is bad when you see a ton of small bucks chasing hard and you KNOW big daddy is close but a no-show. I cant believe the matue bucks are letting them little bucks have all the fun. I got some good recent nighttime pics of big boy in scrapes....so, i know he there somewhere. Been seeing those 2.5 yr old 15 inch 8 and 10 pts doing the chasing....I dont want a 2.5 yr old!!! Lol !!
Re: Hunting a four year old
north mississippi? try south mississippi.. when a deer turns at least 2 years old down here he turns into another animal.. a dead one or nocturnal one

IF YOU POUR IT OUT, THEY WILL COME

When you get to the point where you don't want nothing but what you would mount; you do a lot of hunting and very little killing....................

Re: Hunting a four year old
It's frustrating enough as it is, but when the "dog hunters" move in around your hunting area everything goes into hiding. I wish Mississippi WFP would wake up and see that the hunting of deer with dogs needs to be stopped. I am so sick of working planting, scouting and etc. to have a deer herd on our property for my son, friends and I to hunt and as soon as dog season opens "they" pull up to your property line and dump their dogs out. The "dog hunters" cripple and scare off every deer in the woods. Then they ride the roads and where ever they see a buck cross the road thats where they pull over and dump the dogs, no matter who's property it is on. If questioned they say "oh, my dogs just got out" and make a little sniggering noise or lie and say "i turned them out over yonder, not there. They just didn't bark till they got over on the road."
All of us know when your sitting in a stand that you can hear a long ways, you know what I mean?
I don't see people that "run deer with dogs" as hunters, I think they are to lazy to get out of their trucks and go and really hunt in a stand or blind or however.
Just my 2 cents!!!

I AGREE THERE ARE BAD HUNTERS ON BOTH SIDES DOG AND STILL HUNTERS ALIKE AND I DONT SEE HOW YOU CAN BLAME ONE SIDE OR THE OTHER.
THE BOTTM LINE IS THAT IF WE AS HUNTERS DO NOT PULL TOGETHER WE WILL LOSE THE PRIVALIDGE TO HUNT ANYWHERE IN THE STATE.
STUDIES SHOW THAT HUNTERS ARE THE MINORITY IN MS. AND IF IT CAME TO A VOTE WE WOULD LOSE. JUST MY 2 CENTS

Re: Hunting a four year old
Just two different styles of hunting. I have always felt that "still" hunting is the best way. I prefer to watch deer in their natural habitat, doing things that deer naturally do. IMO

Go head on Bro! I don't get to do it much anymore simply cause we don't have the area to do it in anymore. But the treehuggers that knock it just never knew what real deer hunting with REAL deer hunters was like! I agree a few bad apples ruined a lot of reputations but you right MOST dog hunters were very ethical! And when your dog went on someone elses land they didn't mind because they KNEW you didn't do it on purpose! Never had a landowner yet that wouldn't allow me to go on his land to try to get my dogs back. But yes it's a lost art! It's nothing like the thrill of a good race on a cold frosty morning to get your blood a pumpin!

Re: Hunting a four year old
Okay..Here's my opinion on it now.....
If you want to hunt deer with dogs go purchase your own property and fence it in and keep your dogs off of everybody else's property.
Well my friend....I beg to differ, alot of other states have done it with very much success. Do a little research.
And just so ya know, I grew up and hunted (until around the age of 25) in a camp that hunted with dogs, I coon hunted for 15 years and raised treeing walkers for 9 of those years, I have 4 treeing fiest and 2 Jack Russell terriers now, so I know what it is all about.
My frustration lies in the deer dogs interfering with other peoples hunting and efforts to have quality deer on their property, a place to enjoy, relax. And the dog owners remarks like, "My dog can't read a posted sign" No respect for other peoples property or the rights that come with property ownership.
You would not want someone to come to your house/yard without your permission or consent and lets say dump out a bunch of dogs on your lawn and they run your kids in the house, crap all over your yard, maybe tear up your favorite pair of boots, fishing rod etc. Or maybe if your neighbors might have a bunch of dogs that they turn loose and they come over on your yard/property doing something like the things mentioned above. You work hard, I am sure to have a nice yard, home, pair of boots, fishing rod, a place for your family and your kids to enjoy. Well we work hard to have a place for our family to enjoy by hunting, relaxing, and being in Gods great outdoors and I don't want other people dumping their dogs on my property, either.
My friend, I ain't mad... just trying to give some insight as to how it might feel if ya were on the other side of the situation. God Bless You.

No, I mean working in the same manner as a farmer or gardener works the land and prepares the ground, plants, fertilizes and sprays etc. All dog hunters I know would not know anything about that because they let other people do that and then run the deer that we draw to our land with all the work we do.DO YOU MEAN PUTTING OUT PILES OF CORN?,
