State - Croom

Postby alduck » Mon Dec 01, 2003 5:07 pm

You guys just got a good coach, too bad we missed out on him. We could have hired him, but no, we had to go with a losing NFL assistant coach that always looks like a deer in headlights. Sly Croom will turn State's program around in just a few years, and State will have thebest recruiting in the South since he is a minority. That is not why State hired him, he is a great coach with alot of class. Good Luck.

Thanks for the support. The recruiting advantage is only speculation at this point but I am pleased with his football history. The team captain his Sr year at Alabama, 1st Team All-American, 3 National Championships (1 as player and 2 as coach), Master's degree, and an overall hard-nosed football coach. Given time, State will be successful with this coach.

The sad thing is, I've already seen posts (on UM sports boards) by Mississippi fans calling him the 'Dark Prince'. They used to call Sherrill the 'Prince of Darkness' hence the new "nickname" they've giving Coach Croom.

Coach Croom has my support. Hope his successes carry over to the Dawgs. I would like to see good things out of this program...not just about wins and losses. I want a program where Mama's are proud for their sons to be part of it! I want a program that has integrity and substance. Wins and losses take care of themselves in a quality program. It's also time that a man of color had a chance in the SEC, and I'm proud for it to be at State.

well said, crow. I am an LSU fan but live in MS now and am proud that State picked a good coach to help the program and not a person to please the alumni assc. or whatever! Coach Croom is regarded as a great defensive mind and lord knows, MSU NEEDS THAT! Good luck to the new coach :D

I have heard people that uneasy with the race issue. Once he starts winning football games it will all pass. However if he doesn't win, he won't last long.

I would think his NFL ties would help his recruting just as much if not more than his race. He has been coaching in the pros soince '87 and on 5 different teams. What do you think?

ScottS,

On which boards did you see such comments from Ole Miss fans? I'm a paid member of most all and haven't picked up on any new "nickname." As a matter of fact, your post is the first I've seen to use such a derogatory term. Please either direct us to the post(s) or cut and paste it here.

I will say that your old coach's nickname was well deserved, as State fans should acknowledge and will once the NCAA lowers the boom. You should be happy that crook is gone and you have a man of integrity walking into a hornet's nest.

Really, I am a member of most UM boards, including the Loyalty foundation boards and have not seen the FIRST derogatory comment about Croom. Sounds like more typical MSU conspiracy theories to me.

By the way, Ole Miss had a black head coach (basketball) years prior to MSU. Have a nice day.

He will be good for State. He has seen a lot of diferent ways to run a football program. Now lets see how he handles all aspects of it himself.

The quotes are now gone from the site but I saved them before they were deleted. They were on the OMSN (RebelGrove.com) message board yesterday.

Concerning the supposed recruiting advantage to result from having an afro-american head coach, Rod Barnes has been at Ole Miss 5 years and State's coach, who is white, out recruits Barnes by a mile. So I do not think that being a certain color will automatically mean that person will recruit atheletes of his own race better.

Anyway, according to all the experts, in addition to GH22, State has always recruited well. And I believe they have. To blame the problems on lack of talent hypocritical after bragging on the talent State has signed.

Recruiting highly regarded atheletes is not the sole answer to winning, but it is a real good start. The trick is to recruit atheletes to form a team, and I think it is pretty obvious that either state has not done that or all the blue chippers who went to state were far overrated.

Now, will Croom lead State to success right away? He could. But Jerkie brought in new coaches the last two years and it didn't help. Some say the State players could not catch on to the new systems, especially this year on defense. Croom better keep that in mind. He may not be able to install a pro scheme on either side of the ball because of the abilities, or lack of certain abilities of the players he inherits.
