Welcome to Jackson, home of murders, rapes, burglary, car theft, etc. I can remember when “Welcome to Jackson†had a meaning other than what’s now listed. Today o’ wondrous citizens my car was stolen. Actually, it was a truck. I bought it from my dad to make it through pharmacy school (I’ll finish in May). I have been subsisting on student loans and family 6 years. Before that, I played four years of college baseball and received a degree in biology. I had a dream to play pro ball – a dream I worked hard for, showing up early and leaving late from practice everyday. That dream never materialized, so instead of getting angry and taking what I did not earn, I swallowed my pride and went back to school. All the while, watching my friends get jobs, buy items when and where they wanted, and took their friendly ribbing at my expense. Today Jackson, you worthless sespool, you have lost a friend, a future taxpayer, and most importantly, a good citizen. You are losing them everyday, but the mayor and police do not care. In fact, when the “police†got there, the officer talked about how bad the odds are of regaining my car. Then he proceded to inform me how I could find my own car. “Ride the ghettos and you’ll probably pass it, then just give us a call.†Do you believe that? What’s wrong with this? I’ll tell you, we as citizens can go to jail for taking the law in our own hands, but the criminals can get off “scot-free†with a mere slap on the wrist. If this makes it to print (which I doubt it does), I’m sure the mayor, police chief, city council will all condemn me, saying, “it’s just public ‘perception’ and we actually are working our hind-ends off to stop the crime.†To this I ask, “when was the last year crime actually decreased?†I don’t have figures and to be honest, I am not going to waste my time looking for them, so have fun giving me quotes about the past crime rates. But you tell that to me and the thousands of other citizens that have had things stolen from us by worthless scum that YOU allow to walk the streets to our face. This is the third time my truck has been broken into since May ’02, but the first time it has been stolen. Each time, six hundred dollars in damage was done to the lock system, which I replaced with the help of insurance that I struggle to pay (remember the loans). In that same time frame, a student in my class had his truck stolen at gun-point. It was later recovered when a friend of his saw it traveling down State Street, windows down, rap music blaring. I am sure he just needed it for a little bit, and the little scamp was just fixing to return it. Those little tykes are funny like that are they not? Unfortunately, Jackson is lost. The only way to get it back is by force. Physically taking the streets back, but that will not happen as the “good†citizens of this town are helpless, with hands tied firmly behind their backs. Frankly, I am tired of the liberal media having me believe that I am wrong for making MY money, buying what I want to, etc. I am tired of paying taxes (that’s right, I pay mine) so some worthless thief, rapist, murderer can live in comfort and have cable. So to that end I say, “good†citizens leave now, do not attempt to raise a family in this sespool. To the mayor, police chief, etc I say, "have fun w/ this place because you are soon to be one "good" citizen less - how many can you afford to lose? To the Clarion Ledger I say, "Show some guts, print this, heck it'll probably get some reading." And finally to the worthless scum that is having someone read this paper they stole to them I say, “Heed my warning, if you again find yourself thinking about venturing to my property but value life instead, don’t do it, because you will not hear a sound, not a question will be uttered, I AM GONNA TAKE MY LIL CORNER OF THE WORLD BACK!â€
Sincerely,

sorry to hear about your truck justin....though i rarely visit jackson(mainly because of the reasons you stated) i have friends with family there, and they have just about the same opinion of the leadership there as you do.....pathetic.....it's a lost city, much like most of the towns in the delta....head for the hills, and buy you 100 acres or so, and go to town as little as possible.....
Justin I agree 100% with what you have wrote, the only difference between me and you is that I moved from Jackson to Brandon three years ago because I had my car broken into my motorcycle stolen and by the way told them who did it and gave them the tag # only to here we can try but probally cant find your bike? As bad as I hated to move there being i was raised in Jackson(south) I could see what lied ahead and packed my family and stepped out only to have gone back very few times.
Justin,
Man, I hate to hear what happened. Good piece of writing, I hope it gets published but you and I know better. Things didn't happen like this where Gator and I am from.... the country. If you were caught stealing or even contemplating stealin, the law was the least of your concern, it was the armed landowner. We would shoot your butt over a weedeater, shovel or chainsaw. Fact was, it didn't belong to them.
If there is anything I can do for you, PM me. Good luck, don't let it get you down.

I work for BellSouth and someone stole one of our cars a week ago. The Police saw the car being driven around with the BellSouth stickers painted over and before they pulled the people over, they called BellSouth to see if the car was missing. Also, I was carjacked back six years ago leaving George Street Grocery and at they never contacted me when they recovered that car then. I was sitting around the house one day, up in Memphis, and thought I would call down to see if they had gotten any news. The lady said, "Good thing you called, we were about to send it to the auction." I said, "Huh? No one has contacted me to come get it." Needless to say I did not get it once I saw it as it had been trashed by the crackhead jackazz's that stole it. Does a police report not mean anything?!

i grew up outside of jxn, and i hate to see how it has gone downhill. the metro center / mcdowell road area used to be allot of fun when we were growing up.
when i was young, those doing evil did it in the darkness and shadows. now that junk is mainstream, promoted as the thing to do through music and other media. and they are in your face about it.
just like a young child, this part of society is pushing to see where the limits are..... and they are pushing over those who are the good / God-fearing / principled / patriotic / hard working / family-oriented people that made America great. until we push back and set the limits again....
at some point in time, God will lift his hand off this country, and allow us to reap the fruits of the evil ways...

Sometimes you just have to close your eyes, count to ten, take a deep breath and remind yourself that you wouldn't look good in prison stripes... and just smile at that dumbass and walk away.
Man Gator, tough luck. Sorry to hear about all of your hardship lately. I know it isn't easy doing the school thing and trying to make your way. I recently got done doing the same myself. Just hang in there, get that degree and get the hell out. Ironically, I have a good friend from college that was doing some sort of charity work (I think) downtown. After rapping up the days affairs he was on the way back to his truck when some little punk demanded that he give him some money. He politely told the kid, not a chance. Like most of us here, he didn't get anything in life for free and didn't feel that he should have to give anything away. The kid disagreed with him, by means of pulling a gun on him. Anyway, of course my friend had no choice but to surrender his car keys, wallet, phone, etc... The important thing here is that he wasn't hurt. Material posession can be replaced, but we are only given a few good friends in a lifetime. I am truly sorry to hear of the sad state of affairs in Jackson. Needless to say, my bud is now looking for employment AWAY from jackson. Like you, he too has simply had enough. Good luck and hang in there!

Aw Man! I know how tough it is to work and go to school. Just hang in there and get it done. Don;t worry about that truck! Just finish and then all will fall into place. Concentrate on your finals man! you do not have time for this now! give me a call when you are done and we can go relive some stress in a duck blind and bitch about finals! Better a truck than you! At least your dog was not in the back!

Justin, I know that is terrible. I hate you are put in such a position. But instead of focusing on vengenous channel that enery to be better at what you are doing. With that done "Get the Heck Out" We would welcome a fellow who understands what it means to get knocked down but get back up stronger in Rankin County. Someone who actually feels he should work for his belongings. My heart is with you
Always do sober what you said you'd do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut. -Ernest Hemingway
Just graduated from Millsaps last May and man could I tell you some stories. We had one guy walk through the gate at school, stroll right into the fraternity house where I lived, where he proceded to go down all the halls picking up whatever wasn't nailed down (stopped to pick up someone's underwear from the laundry room) and was walking down West Street when a cop noticed him carrying a bunch of stuff most people don't just walk down the street with unless they stole it. Another guy got in one time, we caught him in the act of stealing, but he pulled a knife. Ever had a knife pulled on you in your own house? Never before have I wanted a shotgun in my hands so bad, including all the times banded greenheads have landed in the decoys while I was picking them up.
Do what I did, finish up and get the hell out. Sorry to hear about your truck.

Justin, hate to hear what happened to you, but i know exactly how you feel, and it ain't just Jackson!!! A few short years ago, I gathered my family up and moved back to Prentiss, MS where Justin(gator), Todd(deadeye) and myself grew up. In a period of less than a year, my house was broken into not once, but twice. Electronics, guns, frozen goods, linens, camo clothing, insulated clothing, and even had the audacity to sit at my dining room table and finish off a twelve pack of Miller Lite I had in the fridge. The second time was similar results. Then we moved back to Vicksburg and up to Eagle Lake. Within a month of being here (more like two weeks), my boat was stolen along with a few rod and reels. So its really not a factor of where you live, its just according to how much useless trash lives around you or ventures by. There is no escaping crime in this day and age.
