Is duck hunting in MS getting worse?

soon I am going to have to buy some land in South Dakota to kill a few ducks!

sniper,i dont think it is just ms.you can also include ar. it has been pretty sad these first few weeks.hopefully after the split it wil be better

I've heard some people around Greenwood say the flyway is shifting, what are y'alls feelings on that?

chaser,i have often times wondered that myself.i remember seeing alot more ducks and canada geese when i was growing up verses what i see now.it just seems that there are more to the west of wynne than there used to be!!!

Is it getting worse, nope we just haven't had many fronts to push the ducks down (not that we normally do this time of year). We had a pretty good hunt the day after Thanksgiving on the tail end of that front, other than that it's been o.k. (not as bad as last year). Shoot, to hear some folks talk you'd think you have to kill a limit to have a good hunt, now I admit it doesn't hurt, but I just wanna be sitting in a duck blind with nothing to worry about while I watch the ducks fly (whether they work or not). I love to hunt ducks and I like to kill ducks, but I'll never let my lack of killin' hurt my love of huntin', I guess I've got "duck fever". Sorry, I kinda got off on a tangent, but I will say it hasn't been a record season in Arkie Land yet either.

Heck I just believe that the ducks don't remember that they can fly further South than South Ill. :lol:

Or It could be the Fed's dumping grain bins of corn on the ground to feed the ducks. :lol:

Could it be something as simple as the weather. :wink:

Oh Man you guys thinking DU is dumping corn with trucks where have you guys been. DU does not nor any other organization use trucks to dump corn. Think about how many truck loads of corn they would have to use to spread enough corn to hold ducks for weeks at a time..Even DU and the whole Union Farmer coop cannot afford the desiel fuel it would take to operate the trucks and loaders....GET REAL.....they use fire control planes and just fly low over those fields and dump the corn... :roll:

I don't think that duck hunting in MS is getting worse, just a lot of the hunters. Some of these Johnny-come-latelies are driving me insane. And its not only the young guys. I have seen some older guys that have been flat out rude.

Guys I have to chime in on this one. I keep hearing all of these posts about how "there ain't no ducks", "DU does this or that", etc.,etc.,etc. My God when did duck hunting become solely about killing ducks only. I hear people bithching because they only limited out by 8 or that their limit was a mixed bag of grays, teal and one green head. I didn't realize that green heads where the only ducks that mattered. Those of you that live in the upper parts of the state and see thousands upon thousands of birds (regardless if they work the dekes or if they are using O2 bottles) should consider yourself more than lucky and privaledged to be where you are! Come on down here to the coast and see what you think! Me, LFTHRN, and SMWHRSTH and a entire host of other coast hunters would love to be "disappointed" with a limit consisting of a mixed bag.

All I'm saying is be thankful for what you have, the good Lord may not let you have it tomorrow.

My .02 is that due to the decreases ozone and the global warming that the seasons (winter, fall, sprind,summer) are shifting. Just my best guess is that we are a full month off maybe even six weeks of when the actual season is suppose to start.

Well boys I'm in from a hunting and packing up to go to Texas for a fun filled weekend of shooting and visiting new friends. Decided I would check in and see what's up and found this thread.

Here is what is happening right now in the state and I have already driven well over 2000 miles following the ducks so far.

1. There are no less than 50,000 birds in the delta right now. The largest concentration I have found are near Brazil Ms and are on private land that cannot be hunted.

2. Morgan break runs next in numbers that range around 20.000 birds that are on a planted food plot that is closed to hunting . Thanks WMA's for your support of hunters. :roll:

3. Panther Swamp has around 10,000 birds on the closed lake off of 49. You can deer hunt there but it is closed to duck hunters. Again Thanks WMA's

4. Private land off HWY 12 has 5000 plus birds that is a Private club and this area is not hunted and is used just as a stageing area.

5. MS River has large number of birds running the channel between Greenwood and Vicksburg but where they are staying is anyones guess because they won't give your spread a second look.

I would say unless things change in the next few weeks it is likely our numbers will be close to last years kills for the state.
We have great snow fall north of Tenn, Ky, and Indiana
Canada is a Ice cube and we still have minimal birds. I have mangaged to scrape up about 30 mallard kills so far this season but it has been all day hunting and I'm getting to old for this day after day.

Good luck with your season and I hope it all come together for us before it's over.

Believe what you like but I have been doing this too many years to feel any different than to know that there is something more to this than just weather. I sat down and reviewed our hunting logs from years past and found that this trend we are in started 4 years ago and has gotten worse since then. Even in the 3 bird days with temps in the 80's we faired much better with less birds to migrate.
