Flu taking its toll

Postby timber-hunter » Wed Dec 10, 2003 9:29 am

 Man oh man I am having to get it now at work the majority of my workers are at home sick with this flu epidemic. I have call all my doctor buds and the vaccines are totally gone. The only place that had a few left was med-serve at tupelo. I don't ever get the shot but my wife gets one every year and this year it looks like she won't. The only advice that has been given to me about this is to stay away from places where alot of people are crammed in together(WAL-MART) and to drink plenty of water. Man I hope I don't get this crap.

Believe it or not ,washing your hands is one of the single most important things you can do to avoid catching a bug.

Another good method for avoiding the Flu bug, is to spend an insane amount of time in a duck blind !

Works fer me ! (knock on wood) :D

hey timber-hunter and all others concerned bout this (and you should be)...the university of ms med center's hypertension clinic should still have some...i gave out bout a hundred on my last rotation, ended nov 21 and they still had bout 12 bottles, meaning bout 120 doses left...there is a delay of bout 4-5 days in which your body's building it's defenses, but if you get it or have already (the flu), the symptoms won't be as bad...another thing i saw the other night is that the strain causing all the problems isn't covered by the virus...it's still worth it to me...UMC is a state run facility, and i don't know how they work out insurance claims (you may even have to be a patient, don't know, didn't do billing) but if your concerned for yourself or your wife, give em a call...i can get you the number if need be...gator

If you are healthy and between the ages of 5-49 try Flumist

Postby Cousin Eddy » Wed Dec 10, 2003 10:51 am

Hey guys, if you are of the right age there is another option on the market that from what I have read in the clinical studies works just as good if not better than the flu shot. It is the new nasal vaccine called Flumist, the studies that I read studied the drug in people when the strain of flew was different than that of the vaccine itself and it still worked in something like 85 percent of patients. I know a few months ago it was like $65 bucks per dose but now they offer a rebate and I heard that the company is going to actually lower the cost to about $35 since the flu shots are gone and this season is going to be a rough one. My wife and I both got Flumist at a local pharmacy here in Jackson. Check it out and see what you think. The company told me that they had millions of doses left and that the CDC was going to recommend that healthy people between 5-49 get Flumist and save the flu shot for the elderly, small children, and people with immunity problems. Hope this helps.

they are lowering the price due to bad publicity, NOT b/c it's "gonna be a bad year"...drug companies do NOT work like that, the see dollar signs, not the health of the public...they make these things in hopes of cornering a market - i.e. the mist instead of the shot...a drug company website and the studies they list are never a good place to find info on a product (be it there's or not)...it's called BIAS...you may be asking, "what bad publicity?" welp, it's a live virus, meaning you can get the flu from the flumist; you can NOT get the flu from the shot...that's the reason you can't give it (flumist) to the elderly or extremely young children (immune systems that don't function as well)....another, it only covers about half of the strains the flu shot covers, meaning you got that much more of a chance of getting the flu...another, b/c it's a live virus, you could infect those around you who's immune system may be low for whatever reason (certain meds, got a sniffle, etc) or other folks at the mall or wherever that may have cancer, hiv, etc and are on meds that lower the immune system - it's called viral shedding...another, it does NOT cover the strain that's causing all the problems, neither the shot nor the mist does, that's why this strain is causing all the problems...the clinic i rotated through would not give it to anyone, regardless, until more studies are done...just too much unknown...in my professional opinion, i would never recommend that to anyone (regardless of age), it is NOT a valid alternative to the flu shot, i'd rather take my chances of not getting the flu than knowingly get it, and honestly do not know how it made it past the FDA regs...my 2 cents...gator

Yeah I have had that happen to me before. Had a guy tell me he had to go to Arkansas to visit his family b/c of a death that had happened. So he takes off that day and I had ot go up to counce, tennesse to the paper mill for some business and I pull up to a gas station in tishomingo and guess who I see. Yep that's right its that boy that I had let off to go to arkansas. Seems like deer hunting took priority over him going to arkansas.

Hey timber....load up on vitamin C. 1000 mg per day. Drink plenty of gatorade.

I got the shot but everyone here at the hospital is getting sick. Our census here is full with sick kids. :(

You better come to Tunica before my group shoots all the ducks!

I had a flu shot and then caught the flu not long afterwards. . . . I got my strain from a guy at the Deer Camp! I think the shot somewhat lessened the symptoms. I didn't ever go to the doc, just kept taking Nyquil or Dayquil and Tylenol to help manage the symptoms. I dont know if the doc can do anything about the flu, but I recomend going cause I kept my symptoms almost 10 days.

welp, after a lil friendly debating and re-reading my post, i do not want anyone to feel i think flumist is something that should be avoided...maybe i should soften the language and say, i think it is ok for someone that fits the criteria...but please, ya'll just protect yourself in some fashion...the flu can be deadly...now, i'm gonna steal a car and go shoot some ducks..gator
