Oldest Banded Bird Killed?

Postby lower14 » Thu Dec 11, 2003 9:41 am

Two years ago, I shot a banded greenhead and when I got the certificate back, the report said "Hatched in 1990 or earlier"! Freaking duck was at least 11 years old.

I was just wondering if anyone else had bagged one that old or thereabouts.

Seems like I remember reading a DU article a couple of years ago about a banded Pintail hen being 28 years old. I could be wrong; it wouldn't be the first time.

No doubt, however, an 11 year old Greenhead is one old dude!

Killed one a couple of years ago that was ten years old. The only other bird that I have heard of being older was a banded susie that was at least 11 or 12, don't remember which, when it was killed.

I am with you dukbum. But I did get a friend of mine started duck hunting and took him out on the MS river. I out shot he and my dad and went to the boat to grab a bite to eat and that SOB shot his first green head and it was banded. One day I will get to kill one too.

I've killed 2 with bands. One was a Woodie drake that was banded 7 years before I killed it. The other was a mallard drake that was banded 9 years before I killed him.

I took my step dad on his first ever duck hunt last year. First bird in was a banded drake wood duck. One shot - one band . I told him there may be five guys in the world who have ever done that. Did i over exaggerate?

I killed a banded mallard in 1998 that was banded 1984 or earlier according to the report.

emo, I know of a guy here in GA that shot his first duck ever, which happened to be a mallard, and was banded. That is some pretty serious luck. As for me, no such luck yet :x, but I'm not giving up on 'em.

My buddy and I both shot a banded hen mallard last year. First banded duck any of us had shot. Both shot at the same time and neither was interested in who killed it until I went and picked the bird up and noticed the jewlery. We decided to flip a coin and of coarse he one. He still taunts me about it.

I killed a greenhead in 1980 that was banded in 1963, and it was one year old when it was banded. The band was worn so thin you could not read the numbers. When I sent it in, they had to use some type chemical on it to be able to read the numbers. They did return the band and I mounted it.

Cool, 5-mile.

I killed one in 2001 that hatched in 1991 or earlier.

Killed another in the same hole the next year that was banded in the exact same location in Manitoba, but it was banded 7 years later. Pretty neat I thought.

oldest banded duck

A few years back a buddy I was hunting with killed a banded pintail. The band was so old that there were only 2 legible numbers. The band had worn almost into on one side and had only about 1/4 inch of metal holding it together!

I killed a greenhead last year that fell into some buck brush and when i retrieved him he had a stick though his head  not sure how he flew around like that :? but seriously i've never been on a hunt where a banded bird was killed. with my luck i will hunt for fifty years and never kill one or i'll shoot down a can out of season that's banded and get the book thrown at me
