Years ago I went up to Glenwood Springs area. If you are going early...last week of august, then you probably won't hear any bugling to speak of. The best thing to do is cover ground...LOTS AND LOTS of ground. Look for areas with less steep grade...we didn't find much sign in areas where the general slope was steeper. You will know when you find "THE" place...set up there with climbing stands overlooking the convergence of a few trails leading up/down the mountain, get in early, sit down and hold on. Those elk up there aren't use to being shot at by boogers up in trees. Remember that your scent will blow up the mountain in the morning and blow down the mountain in the evening due to thermals. We found more sign in the quakies than we did in the dark timber...but don't know if that's "normal" or not.

Another thing, elk have a "smell" to them that is unmistakeable. If you come across an area that a herd of elk JUST were you'll smell them. To describe the smell I would use "musty" or "musky" however you spell that word in that sense. We walked upon an area with 6-8 fresh beds and could actually smell them. I feel like we jumped them, just never knew it..the beds were still warm and FRESH scat was dropped too...still green and soft. Speaking of scat, look for high travel areas with different scat freshness levels. Most importantly is fresh, green and soft, but it must be mixed in with other levels, brown and semi-soft/hard, to black and dried up. If you find all 3 you can rest assured the are using the area now, and have been regularly using it for quite some time. Just finding fresh scat alone tells you that they were recently there, could have just been passing through one time, thats why it's very important to find different stages of it in one area.

DC, i was messing w/ my buddy LWL who in turn did the same.......it's called, in layman's terms, "pickin' on buddies".....happens all the time, here and in the real world.

maybe you might order some thicker skin off ebay then come back for another try???
