I have S&W .44 with a 2x Leopold. It is accurate out to 100 yds. When I deer hunted, I bought it to put the fun back into deer hunting, a challenge. I hunted with it in the same setting I would with a bow. The fartherst shot I've taken with it was 16 yds. Luckily, I've never missed a deer with it and have killed several.
As posted above, have a solid rest and practice alot. Know your limits.

Re: Pistol set Up ....need advice
I just bought a .44 S&W and put a Bushnell 2-6x scope on it. Shooting 240 gr. Winchester factory loads it shoot flat out to 150 yards and then drops out of sight. That's way more range than you need in the woods and if you're like me you're just not gonna pick up the pistol to hunt a large field or food plot. I really thought I wanted the .460 (will shoot .454 Casull and 45LC) but factory ammunition for it is ridiculous, $65-70 per 20, and there just isn't alot of good reloading info available yet. The guys I talked to, though, that shoot the .460 are shooting iron sights at 200 yards with zero hold over. Another factor that played into my decision was the number of photos and stories I came across of guy taking African game with the .460 and .500. One shot kills on elephant and cape buffalo! If it'll do that it's too much gun for a whitetail that I plan to eat.

If it's not to much trouble, just take both a pistol and rifle with you if you are hunting a box blind on a power line or something similar. That way if Mr. Boone and Crockett pops out at 200 yards you can bust his butt with the rifle.

A S&W 629 is a great 44 mag., combined with a 2x Leupold makes a deadly combination. Practice is the key to success. My suggestion would be to also buy a .22 pistol with a pistol scope and shoot a couple thousand rounds at anything you can find.

Ive killed several deer w/ some of the .44's, 454, etc. but I really enjoyed the TC.
7x30 Waters with a 4 power Leupold made a great combo...very fun to hunt with...easy to shoot, great trigger and increased your range and knock-down power
