My youth group used to do a several week long ministry for kids every summer over by Tanglewood apartments, well before they tore them down. Sure we had to have a squad car and officer parked out front the whole time but whatever, just tax dollars. Deep down I know its a good thing to try and help where you can but I always left feeling like their parents dropped them off to get them out of the house and the only part the kids connected with was snack time. We also spent countless hours fixing up houses, raking yards and cleaning up trash in the blocks surrounding that but nothing ever got better. Tell you when it got better tho, when Tanglewood apts got leveled and guys at the house that the cops always told us to stay away from got in a shootout with the cops and the criminals lost.
See it didn't matter how many pieces of trash we picked up or cups or jungle juice we passed out, the only thing that area responded to was a show of force and a willingness to follow thru with it.
The guys on here that train dogs know best...you don't reward an animal for bad behavior or pussyfoot around with discipline, you punish and make them start over until they get it right.
You are right you can't help somone that won't help themselves.. But there are plenty of people that need help and are willing to do thier part, they just need a little help to get started. The only problem I have with the whole racism thing is that to label a whole race of people because of the actions of some is not right. There are lots of bad people in this world of all shape, sizes and colors..
