I lived out west 4 years. Main difference from south is ....in the south you hop in your truck and go down the county road and climb up in your tree stand and hunt for afternoon after work.......out West..........you put in for a tag, if you get drawn then you plan the "weekend" you are going to hunt Big Game and pack accordingly which could be involved. I lived in AZ and CO.....Upland.....you hunt streams and brooks that can be stacked with mallards. Grouse, quail and etc......heck of alot of fun............I loved my time out there..I left no weekend uneventful but i was single. However ...........it's different.........scouting? will take your breath away..i never got use to that altitude..of coarse i'm built like a boar hog which not mt. friendly.................i say..........go.....you can always come back and i did......load up on grits and country fried steak before you go..........your accent will open alot of doors for you....

If your young and single, I don't see any reason why you shouldn't go.. I made the jump from Tx to Ms when I was 24 just to try something different. Even though it wasn't a climate change it was a cultural change. I was only planning to be here a few years then move back, but that was 14 years, 1 wife and 2 kids ago..

"It's a cattleman's paradise to hear Jake tell it" -Woodrow F. Call-

"Sounds like a **** wilderness if you ask me" -Gus McCrae-

My brother-in-law lives in SW Montana so we get to go out there ever so often. Beautiful country. Glacier National Park is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Wildlife everywhere. Alfalfa fields full of whitetails, ducks and geese wherever you turn...pronghorn...elk... My brother-in-law actually has to put out orange highway cones to mark mallard nests so that he won't mow them.

Almost took a job offer in Bozeman a few years back. Even with the substantial increase in the pay offer, the cost of living in that particular area was really steep, so I declined. I'm not sure if the cost of living increase would be as such in Missoula. Also, it's a long ways from MS and TN just in case we had a family emergency with our parents.

One thing my brother-in-law really misses after being out there for over 20 years is the southern woods. I've heard him say more than once he misses the trees. Concerning the winter weather, ironically it effects him more to come to MS with it's high humidity than it does the drier Montana air. My father-in-law spent some time out there helping out on the ranch in the dead of winter a couple of years ago and he fared very well. However, I'm sure not everyone would share that same opinion.

Of course if you can't decide which route to go, you could always do what my taxidermist does....split the time between the 2. Him and his wife spend summers in Ennis, MT and winters in Paris, TN. That would be a nice option to have.....

I notice everyone mentioning what they do have out in Montana, but no one has mentioned the one obvious thing that they don't have... and that in itself is almost all the reason you need.

Medicaid? Southern women? What are y'all talking about? I'm speaking of hurricanes! Man I hate those things! The wind, water, rain. Those things scare me.

....time for me to step in again....I am actually from North Carolina.......worked in Mississippi, Michigan, North Carolina, Arkansas, and a little in Oregon. Traveled to most places east of the Mississippi and many West of the Mississippi, but never set foot in Montana. I can tell you this........Oregon was beautiful, people are nice......but there's something different about them. This would be a career move, not just taking a job. It could be a huge step professionally, it's one of those things that I could be there the next 20 years. It won't be "easy" just to pack up and move back. The career opportunity is great, just not so sure about the place........for the record, I've been all over......don't knock Mississippi guys, it's really not a bad place.

that's a big decision you will have to ultimately decide. I wish the best for you on which ever decision you make.

For me, I would love to go out there and just 'see' it. I have never seen the mountains, the rolling grass lands, or aspen groves. I have only been as far north as the Missouri/Arky state line. My adventures have taken me through LA, TX, AL, GA, FL, and even the bahammas. For some reason I have always enjoyed coming home to MS. I have a brother here, friends that are as good as Gold, along with my mom and grandparents. It's just 'home' even though most of the time I really don't care for it  .

I wish I could just up and go, but have gotten myself in a bind. I can't just pack and leave, and it really has hit home. If you want too, and see yourself enjoying it, I say go for it.

Note: I'm the last one you should be listening too  .

Good Luck!

Heard a old cowboy from Montana say that Jackson was the coldest place on earth! I have a place in Kansas and 20 hear is twice as bad as 20 there.
