That would be a mottledated teal, probably the best tasting game bird that flies the skies today!

or it could have been a Hooded Merganzer! Either one are great table fair!

You did clean it right?

Mergansers.

PLEASE don't take this the wrong way, as i am not trying to get on you about this, but if you are confusing canvasbacks and mergansers you are in desperate need for a duck ID book. If not you are going to be saying hello from the county prison.

Canvasbacks weigh about 3-4 lbs and are white with a rusty head, black front and sloped head.

Mergansers:

Hooded black head, white patch white belly, on the water have a simmilar coloration on their body to a wood ducks.

Common merganser brown head not a lot of color

Red breasted a little larger than the other two mergansers greenish head.

LIMIT (VERY IMPORTANT IN YOUR CASE) Canvasbacks 1 per day, mergansers 5 per day in addition to your duck limit only two of which can be hooded mergansers.

Therfore if you in fact did kill two cans you would be over the limit and Mr. Greenjeans would have a not so freindly talk with you.

Describe it more, like what color was the rest of its body and what color was the beak? The only duck I can think of with green on its head besides the almighty is drake spoonie or greenwing, betting its drake northern shoveler with all the shovelers this year
