Most memorable moments so far this season?

Postby chevy01234 » Mon Jan 25, 2010 2:19 pm

Well?

What are your most memorable moments this season so far?

I have seen Novacaine's pretty little daughter with a strap of ducks, Up2Early and his kids with Lawdawg, Champ with the RNT crew, Gator and a "custom" hunt, Esjay with a banded mallard from "the camp", numerous other pictures of the kids smiling with straps of ducks, alot of happy hunting dogs, and more!

Just curious as to some of the highlights of everyone's season. I'm sick of hearing (and saying) how bad of a season it has been because of "lack of ducks, weird weather, etc"! Sure it hasn't been the best season for everyone but if you hunt at all, you will have some good times to reminisce about in years to come from this past season. Memories don't necessarily mean piles of dead ducks either, some great hunts have been had with only one or two birds being bagged. I know we still have a few days left of the season, but I am bored and figured it would be a decent topic. Please try not to dumb this post up with the normal BS that get's put in posts on this site.

Feel free to post pictures too..

You mentioned mine, Chevy. between the hunt with dad that ended with a banded mallard, and the hunt with Up2Early's kids, I couldn't have asked for a better season. And since I am headed to San Fran for the rest of the week, my season is over.

It's definitely been one for the books.

Watched my little brother (12) kill his first duck this year in LA. Big bull Sprig..... Other than that I'd have to say my highlights were Josies, Hanging out with the chicks from Josies, and a Night at the Electric Cowboy in Jonesboro.

Almost forgot.....Long night at the Library in Oxford last weekend, that led to me sending Jeff (GH22) obscene text messages and my buddy having no recollection of the 1.5 mile walk into the woods the next morning......

Staying in Josie's til 1am, helping cleanup and trying to keep Pete from singing queen of my double wide trailer one more time.

Seeing my first ever double banded greenhead in person, after missing the first shot into the group.

Looking at Pete's buddy in the truck last fri and wondering if he had watched The Hangover way too many times and if he was trying out for The Hangover 2.

Letting two fully plumed bluewing teal drakes come in at 15 yds and never calling the shot.

I have a few highlights from this season:
*the one that you mentioned at "the camp" - probablly one of the best hunts we've had there.

*also went on a few hunts with a good friend from way back. we never really had big piles of dead ducks, but at the end of the day, it didn't really matter - we had a large time regardless.

*taking a 12 year old & letting him kill his 1st duck - always a good time.

*bigwater, cajun squealer & charlie holmes - again, not piles of dead ducks, but plenty of laughs. i was not laughing at you matt, rather "laughing wiff you" SPLASHHHHHHH

Hunting with kids and friends is always the highlight for me. One thing happened this weekend that will be etched in my mind until i die. I carried my son and one of his hunting buddies to a cypress break for a thrown together last minute hunt. Started off crappy-you know the routine, runnin late, borrowed boat and camo, ducks not acting right, son left his gun, had to borrow mine, etc, etc. We put out decoys and can't really find a good spot to hide close to the opening in the timber without sticking out like a sore thumb.
I notice a big cypress log ( 40ft x 3.5ft diameter) floating in the perfect spot. I'm thinking now if that was me and my buddy i grew up hunting with-that is where we would hunt. Well no sooner than i got that thought out of my mind, my 16 yr old say's-"Dad, leave us here on this log and you go ride up the break and stir up some ducks for about an hour." I immediately thought back to many years ago growing up in the delta duck hunting with a buddy and making memories. Every duck hunt was an adventure wether we killed ducks or not.
Well i left them on the log and got out of sight and just watch and listened. I got to witness 2 best buds forming that delta boy hunting bond, calling, shooting, laughing, and making memories out on an ol cypress log in the middle of a delta break. It did my heart good and gave me another great memory to save for the day that i am to broke down to go with them. Hopefully they will remember that hunt when they are my age and appreciate that time together. My $0.02

watching Cash bring me back a Ross band and greenhead band in a span of three days.

video hunts.

seeing Cash "figure out" hunting as opposed to training. he is a great test dog and now he has the hunting part, which is the one that counts...

every hunt with my dad i got to go on this year.

Over Christmas break, I took my 14 yr old daughter with me. It was one of those rare days where everything lined up just perfect- we both killed limits, with the birds coming all the way in and hovering over the decoys at 10 yrds. I cannot put into words how proud I am of the baby girl. More important than killing limits was that she dropped the teen age attitude and we were able to talk, joke, and laugh. It was a day that brought us both closer together.

That has to be the best one yet IMHO.
Congrats.
