Beginner Calling
Get the CD by Keith Allen at http://www.pureduck.com. It is the best instruction out there, period. Any of these calls are inexpensive, very high quality and would suit him very well: http://www.waterfowlreview.com/articles ... k_call.htm

Just get him "Mastering the Multi-Roboduck Setup" tape and forget the call! Why go to all that trouble of having to listen to him practice, when it can be insta-matic? By the way, I just got me a microwave fireplace! Now I can make love all night long in front of the fireplace...in 5 minutes!
I'd get him a Haydell's DR85...got the duck built in!
There are a dozen websites that have basic duck calls (Rich-n-tone has one that is not bad) domonstartions, and they are free. Give him "The Deceiver" and take him out where he can hear lots of ducks...like right now.

Don't forget the Primos Original Wench!!!
great call
Yeah, don't forget to throw it in the trash after hitting the worst 5 note you'll ever hear come out of a duck call.

I know there are people that love them to death..........but I've never heard one that sounded anything close to a duck.

Shane Roten put out a call called the Vortex. It's a poly call you can get around $20. It is not pretty, all black. There is no tape with this call but it is EASY to blow. Very little air needed. I am by no means an expert caller and used one last year with good successs. Get him one of those calling CD's for his computer nad let him drive his folks crazy practicing.

You have heard me call and you know I know what I'm talking about
email me--I have some instructional stuff that may be helpful
also Gulf Coast gave you ( and any one else that is serious about learning to call better) some good leads with the Carlson method--
once you get past the 'technical verbage' and look at the systematic method itself--it provides a good base for teaching yourself how to call and how to look for a call that will give you the best performance and it beats 'make it sound like this boy'
especially if your Uncle is better at riggin jerk strings than calling
Most of the call makers today make good calls but you will find that some suit your style better

I agree with Mark on the Keith Allen CD. It is very well done and covers the basics step by step.
Check out Rick Perry's Winglock Calls. I have a maple barrell with poly insert double reed and it is an awesome sounding call. It's just under $40 and you get a beautifully engraved dark maple call that is VERY EASY to blow. http://winglockcalls.com/

Bluehead, you better watch what you say around here . . . cause I am pissed!!! The Double Nasty II is NOT just for beginners. I had a chance to blow one that Buck Gardner gave to someone I took hunting and It sounded real good so I ordered one. It is my favorite now. It sounds like that $40.00 call by echo, maybe a timber call, I forget the name of it but I have used it for 2 years. Maybe I saw where GH22 mentioned it once. Oh well.
I guess I would say the Double Nasty II does not sound plastic; it sounds ducky to me and it has a GREAT NAME!
Uhmmm, maybe that says something about my callin, I dunno. Maybe I am kinda basic. I can't handle a call with about 18 different sounds. 2 ducks is about all I can make.

If you knew how much a cat hates to hear a duck call in the house, that will give you all the practice incentive in the world. I have the Buck Gardner video that is "free to good home" if someone wants it.
