Those are called locking bands. Haven't seen them in a while. My dad and brother were lucky enough to kill a few of those on Old Hickory a few years back, but I never got one. Congrats!

I've heard several stories about multiple birds banded in a group of wood ducks. They apparently stick together, same group that was netted and banded together are still together in duck season.
