The Season Ends

Postby Marty N. » Sun Jan 31, 2010 6:03 pm

The season ends today, wet dog’s, cold hands and early morning sunrises come to an end. Hearing the sharp whistle of a low flying Woodie as he gives a flyby just before shooting time. Your hunting partner looking at you and smiling in the dark, listening to a Hen Mallard call as she greats the morning, you know he is smiling because all you can see are the whites of his teeth. The sun slowly rises and puts a glow on your section of the world, letting the decoys be visible to that group of ducks just over the tops of the Timber Hole or the other end of the Field, letting you showcase the skill’s you have worked so hard to perfect with your call. The good nature kidding when your call squeaks or blows out, or the congratulations you receive when you talk that shy group into dropping those feet and settling into the decoys. The high fives for that unbelievable magic BB shot you or your buddy made, or when that flock of 6 came into the decoys and you and your partner laid them all down. Ends for another year.

The sound of a flock of Greenheads bouncing off of the trees as they fall into your hole, the concussion of the gun pushing against your shoulder, the sound of the ducks splashing as they are knocked from the sky, the look in your dog’s eye, his body language begging you to let him do what god created him to do. All this is over for another year.

This season has been a hard one for most of us; the ducks were here, then there, then gone. Good hunts followed by Great hunts; there are never any bad hunts for a waterfowler just some that are better than others, over for another year.

Another season leaving memories for each of us, never long enough, never returns soon enough, but always passing.

Now the anticipation starts again, the second guessing of decoy placement, do I need more decoys should we move the blind down further or back another 30 yards, what about a new call, or, maybe moving into a new lease or what about buying a layout boat to use in the break. Anticipation, planning, thinking about Waterfowl Season next year.

Every ending is a beginning, mine started today and I hope yours will as well.

Thanks guys, I always go into a little depression after the season ends, probable will last a week or so. Too much time between seasons if you ask me, if I had the money I would just chase them all the way south into Mexico and beyond.

Good post! It hasn't really hit me yet because I haven't finished packing everything up. I'm with you though. I don't have the money but if I did my passport would be getting stamped in Mexico and probably Argentina & Uruguay as well.

That was a great post Marty. You summed up the way I feel about the end of season every year. All of my stuff is laying out in the sun getting dry so I can put it all away for next year. The depression lasts for 2 or 3 weeks for me, then it's getting close to Turkey season.
