Re: 09/10 season rate it
a 10 on being able to share the blind with my son and my friends and on the fact that I shot a 10+ year old banded mallard.
-1.5 on the number of ducks seen, shot at or kilt....
Too much water most of the season...

Re: 09/10 season rate it
New baby this year kept me closer to home than usual. Didn't make it to Arkansas while my buddies were whacking them up there. Didn't scout as much around here as I would have liked. It was still a pretty decent year. For a little while there during the freeze, it was almost like the good old days. Lots of teal this year helped the numbers substantially. Very few gadwalls for some reason. I had a good time this year. Several great hunts overshadow some bad ones. I'm sad it's over. Can't wait til next year.
On a five year scale, I give this year an 8.
On a ten year scale, a 6.
On a twenty year scale, a 4.

Re: 09/10 season rate it
We killed 476 on the river in 11 days. Very few days of limits on the fields and brake's. Most days were 5 to 12 on fields with a stretch of O's. Its just tuff in the guiding business when the ducks don't come.
I have talked to folks and the big push of ducks went way west of us. North Texas and Oklahoma.
I will just dream of what next year might bring and I am working on the crappie right now.

I will rate this with as many ducks as I brought home - - - - 3.
Believe it or not, I went less and shot fewer times than ever! (And that's saying something, since I've been so few times in recent years.) Something has GOT to change!

Re: 09/10 season rate it
I guess I would give it a 6. We killed a lot more Mallards early than usual and very few Gadwalls. The big freeze was incredible, I hunted that Fri-Sunday and it was crazy to see those numbers of ducks. Huge groups just pouring into a small hole. It was a spectacle that I will remember for the rest of my life. That was certainly the highlight of the season. After the thaw the hunting in my area went down hill pretty quickly. If I split the season into a pre freeze and a post freeze segment the pre freeze would probably get a 7 or 8 with the post freeze being a 3.

Prolly a 6 think me my partner counted the other day and were somewhere around the 200 range for the season, not as bad as last year but not as good as a lot of years. Hunted more days this year compared to others as well.

Don't have a number but it would be between 1-10. I did have a good year, stayed closer to home and hunted with some of the same old friends and some new ones. Killed my first band and watched R johnson and dukbum miss alot
. I also got a new dog the last week of season and took him on his first hunt, he picked up 12 birds. Now off to training him and getting my stuff ready for the turkey woods!

If some animals are good at hunting and others are suitable for hunting, then the Gods must clearly smile on hunting.

Duck and deer
3. Pretty dismal duck numbers and few big buck sightings.

Worst I've experienced from a hunting standpoint- 1. Had couple of good hunts when everything froze up.
Always good time at the camp however.

if you rate any season below an 8, you might be in it for all the wrong reasons........jus' sayin'
For me, I'd have to say this year was a 9.

Re: 09/10 season rate it
Duck hunted fewer days than usual, there were several days that left alot to be desired numbers-wise, but zero'd ONCE, which is better than usual. Saw some new areas, hunted with some new folks, revisited some others, and deer hunted with the boys - with great success - way more than we'd have done had the duck flights been better. Heard of a single instance that a club shot their best year ever, but duck club numbers are so relative as to be inconsequential. Was in on a double-banded ross' kill, a double-banded scaup kill, and 2 banded spec kills - Delta picked up 3 of them - but came up empty handed on the draws. Whereas last season ended in a desolately iced-up, no shot fired manner, this year finished with enough paddles down, wings cupped decoying mallards on a beautful day in a special place to remind me of why I love it so damnned much. Like wet wood, the season amounted to lots of false starts, but never really got lit off to a good roaring blaze; was forgettable in many ways, and memorable in so many others. The only thing certain to pull it out of the crapper became - next season. But that's duck hunting. Been that way my entire life.
