Nah, might oughta wait a year or two and let him grow into a 190" or 200" deer and get yourself a new state record. Be the same as what those boys down in LA have done essentially.

I can tell ya now....if i had 1000ac in south la, i promise you i would high fence that sucker! ....and I HATE high fences!

Maybe I'm missing something, only been to south LA a couple times. What makes a high fence in that are so great, or necessary?

1,000 acres is a LOT of land. I think deer can still be wild in an enclosure that big. as long as you don't put on drives to force the deer to the fence, I would have no problem hunting something like that.

That's like saying that it's not really fishing when you catch big bass out of a 60 acre lake, it has to be out of the pearl river.

I don't see anything wrong with high fencing a 1000 acres sept I dont have the land, fence, and that deer in it.

I've hog hunted out of south texas on a place that is highly managed, Bar None Ranch. The guy Chase who owns Artemis Outdoors is who manages the deer population. They have upwards of 8000+ acres, if I remember correctly, which is surrounded by game fence. The property borders Nolan Ryans ranch and I've hunted a stand there and was able to see Ryan's house on the ranch. That being said, with the amount of money and effort they put into management, I can understand why they have game fences. With that much property, it's still a hunt and picking the places you want to hunt. I've seen pictures of monsters on the stand wall and those deer are ones that deer hunters are to NOT shoot. They are being kept for their pedigree. I've watched a 24 point deer through the scope one hunt. Boy was that tough not to pull the trigger on. Artemis manages 19 different ranches and they will fly a chopper over the property scouting for deer. Shoot a net over a buck and haul it to another ranch for breeding. Now, I don't care for a place that has 10 acres and keeps the deer in a pen until its time to hunt. I can see where 1000 acres may still be wild, but I've never been on anything lese than 8000+.


If anybody got $40,000, you can buy this stud for your property. I think you'd want to have a game fence around your property though. Wouldn't want it to go down the road to Joe and he takes your prized breeding deer.

not sure, camlock would know better where its at. I know Addis is down Hwy 1, south of I-10 and right along the river.

I see where y'all are coming from on the breeding deer part now. I didn't realize those big ranches had that kind of game management going on where they were actually growing the bucks to breed. I can see keeping him on your place if you've got that kind of money and breeding program tied up in him, but I'm still with Mudhog, I'd much rather see bigger tracts of land than 1000 ac being fenced for hunting in. I guess some people got the money and time to manage their property like that though, and as long as it's within the law then it's ok. It's just my opinion that it's still not like hunting wild deer that move out of an area once they're pressured, food runs out, chasing does, etc.

I dont care...to me its just like shooting a cow. You fence in 1000 acres, feed em and breed em, get the best genetics, and shoot them. Whats the difference? A cow is just as wild as a deer on that 1000 acres. Dont mean you cant fin him. Not my cup of tea I guess. I dont want a "bought for" deer in my house or office.

And Law Dawg, this is not even close to the lake deal. Fish are fish and I would liken this to catching one out of Bass Pro's aquarium...not a small pond.

it's a good ways off I-10...it's back in the Addis/Plaquemine area.

Having a high fence in this part of South LA has value simply for the protection of land and investment. Considered that you are less than 12 or so miles from Baton Rouge and the overpopulated suburban areas around it, crazy people obsessed with killing animals and fishing and what not, it would be hard to hang a treestand, put money into developing a decent access road, etc. People would wear your stuff out, mud riding your roads, pouching day and night, stealing anything you left out...on and on and on. So the high fence serves more purpose in protecting your investments than it does in growing your deer and making them easier to kill...in some cases...

I have hunted next to some high fence ranches and it sucks to watch 180 class bucks looking thru the fence at your does and your scrub bucks.... With that being said.. I think you gotta have a good sized tract of land to keep the bucks "fair chase"... 1k acres would IMO be a little small.. A square mile is 640 acres so that is not very big. I would think it would have to be about 10k acres. .

This is EXACTLY like catching them in a pond. fish are fish, deer are deer, and cows are cows. like i said before, 1,000 is a LOT of land and I would venture to say that there would be deer on that land that would never be seen in the daylight. Now if it were a 50 acre enclosure, I would see where your analogy about Bass Pro's aquarium would make since.

don't non fenced areas take pride in feeding and letting certain deer breed in order to ensure good genetics? I know the camps I have belonged to do. the difference with a high fence on this type of enclosure is that you can somewhat ensure that Brian down the street (random name, I promise) won't shoot the 3 or 4 year old that you want to reach maturity.

now If they are shipping tame deer in and putting them in front of a corn feeder for someone to shoot, I will agree that is not hunting. But why do you need 1,000 acres high fenced if you are shipping in tame deer?

1000 acres high fenced...is not a lot of land...but I guess it perspective.

I'm down with high fencing land...but not high fencing 1000 acres. I own 1500 and if I high fenced it to keep billy bob next door from shootin my deer (which I've contemplated doing) and it's just not even fair...

10,000 is another story they can arguably still be wild in that, but 1,000 is not that much when you really get down to it. Especially when it would heavily depend on the makeup of the land (pines, hardwoods, fields ect)

My big problem with these artificially grown deer is that it will one day be almost impossible to kill a 100% wild deer they're all going to be decendants of escapees or grown deer.
