West Coast to East Coast

Postby armyduckman » Fri Apr 30, 2010 9:39 am

I have decided that the U.S. Army has a prejudice against my hunting ducks. After spending the 2009-2010 Duck Season in the desert of California, this morning I get an assignment sending me to Fort Bragg, NC this fall. At least I have been assigned there and do know of several places to hunt, but this is getting rediculous. At least I will go from a 48 hour drive to a 12 hour drive to get back home to MS.

I earned that merit badge back in 2004. In the past ten years i have been deployed to Iraq three times for 32 months, moved 7 times, lived in 7 different states, and had two divorces. The first ten years i was in the army, I deployed once for 6 months, moved 3 times, and lived in 3 different states. the times they are a changing.

There are a few good places to hunt ducks not too far from Fort Bragg. The Croatan National Forrest has several impundments. It is not like Stutgart, AR but you can kill a few ducks. Lake Matttamuskeet in Hyde Co has some of the best Tundra Swan hunting in the US. The biggest pintail I ever shot was from there. But, you will need a weekend pass to go that far off base and get a permit as well as sign up for the draw. There are tons of places to shoot sea ducks in the pamlico sound. You need to hook up with the right guides to do it. Just and FYI one of the barrier islands there is a place you can hunt phesanats and sea ducks in the same day. It's an old hunting camp where they released ringtails and due to the calcium in the soil from oyster shells the pheasnats can actually reproduce. It's one of the few places in the Eastern US where they have wild pheaants. I lived there for almost 10 years and killed a lot of birds. It's not like a "Whistling Wings" video in AR or SD but if you are diligent and scout hard enough there are several places to scratch out the occasional limit.
