My office is at the Downtown Airport here in Mobile, and I can tell you all, without a doubt, that the current plan seems to be to fly over as many times as possible and stare the slick to death. There are at least 40 flights a day now full of politicians, execs, and media folks just out of this airport, to go look and talk about this thing. Seems if they fly over it enough, maybe the disturbed air will disperse the oil.
On a positive note, Evergreen is bringing in 7 Air Tractor spray planes in the next day or so to start spraying a bacterial dispersant of some kind. They can run about three times the amount of material that the govt. sprayers can and will start along the shores working out into the Gulf.
I've stoped taking calls from people who want to go out and "see the oil". We're just telling them no. It just doesn't seem right to capitalize on a problem like this and turn a profit on it. Too many aircraft out there now anyway, and all the sightseeing is going to be in the way of the people actually working it, just like after a hurricane.
So far, we've only gotten a little on the beaches a Dauphin Island. Mostly what appears to be residue from the burn off. Small "tar balls" they're calling them. Hopefully this dispersant Evergreen is going to spray will help, and it won't be much worse. They are gonna start down around Venice and around the edges. We shall see.

It is starting to be reported that the top hat design has also failed due to ice forming on the interior causing it to float and not properly seat on the seafloor. The next option now is to stick a tube inside the rupture and try to suck the oil out to a ship on the surface. My prediction with the siphon approach...it will fail too.

I am beginning to think that BP does not have the slightest idea how to stop this thing until they get a directional drill in place to intercept the well (~3-4 months from now).

This reminds me of some old 80s sitcom in which someone puts too much washing detergent in the washing machine. Bubbles start to overcome the room and no matter what they do, they cannot stop it.

Glad some people can find such humor in this spill!!! :?
Over 50% cancellations at Casinos and hotels down here. The spill is really starting to affect the local economies!! We are hearing people holding up building back there waterfront homes until the spill is "fixed". The slow recovery from Katrina, struggle against the recession and high insurance rates is grinding to a stop now do to this disaster!! There are a lot of us down here with our livelihoods at stake!!! So, I dont care if they take a giant clown stuffed with old tires, hay, and golf balls and shove it down the pipe and stop this from getting any worse; we need it to be stopped!!! My family needs it to be stopped!!! My friends need it to be stopped!!! My town needs it to be stopped!!! We have recovered a good bit from Katrina but this will be the nail in our coffin if we catch it on our chin!!!

Sorry for the rant, (pretty F@@$$@$ frustrated) but just saying......

Is there not anyway to just blow the dam thing up and let it fill in? I know it sounds to simple but we are talking golf balls, some goodyears, and hay.

There sure is. Russia has already used controlled nuke explosions to plug leaking wells.

dude, you know me better than to think i'm making light on this situation.......in fact, i guess my sarcasm has been missed.

here's the truth......i find it outright offensive that my intelligence is being insulted by these lamebrain ideas. i'm sorry, ANYONE that thinks that while this "cap/dome" thing has failed due to icing, too much torque, etc etc AND FAILED MISERABLY, yet hay and golf balls, hair and whatever else WILL WORK needs to be examined.

they have no plan, as we can tell, they have no contingencies - again, this is apparent, and i watched them squirm on TV the other day offering NO SOLUTIONS except saving THEIR OWN ASSES by tossing the dude next to them under the bus for not doing their job.

everyone, EVERYONE ON THE PLANET, should be pissed at the lack of planning, the total unadulterated apathy towards something like this and it's affect on the ecology and overall population..........and, everyone should seek out some heads on various platters.

it's pitiful..........and, now that i've explained it, i hope you understand the earlier sarcasm.

thanks, and if anyone feels the need to further tell me just how bad this is (supposedly i can read though), feel free to call me, b/c i know you know someone that knows someone that knows another somebody, and if you really want to bad enough, you can get ahold of me - call it 7 degrees of ducksouth seperation.

the dome technique has worked at lower depths. I'm sorry, but there is no REAL way to "plan" for a disaster without having a disaster. Case in point is the dome. You can't go out into 5000' of water and intentionally make a well leak to test the theory and see if it works, that's what I mean by no real way to plan. All the computer models and simulations in the world don't equal true life. Ideas are theorys and until the idea is proven, it's just that, a theory. How do you prove an idea, put it to test in a real life experience.

A local company here in New Iberia developed an ocean going vessel that was capable of cleaning up such a spill as what is taking place now. It was a 100% self contained floating city and it could handle an ungodly amount of oil. It would soak up the water and filter it or just allow retention time for the oil to float to the top within its tanks. This vessel would also be capable being at the site within x amount of time, yadda yadda yadda. Oh, this was developed back when Valdez happened, 1989. Nobody wanted to spend the money to build it, yet now with the current economy, that price has probably tripled or more.

The quickest way, and I've mentioned it recently, would be to nuke the well. We all know every Tom, Dick and Harry with PETA and EPA and yadda yadda yadda will not want someone to intentionally set off a nuke though, even though Russia has proved it to work. Isn't this world trying to reduce the amount of nuclear weapons is held? Why not use up one now to stop this well? But then Japan may think we declaring war with them or some crazy crap like that.

Same goes for people wanting the new well drilled faster than 2-3 months. You can only push a drill bit so much before the bit breaks. When the bit does break, you have to pull all that drill pipe out and start over once the bit is changed. Go try and drill through some 1/2" steel with a drill press and bear down on the lever as hard as you can, you won't be drilling to much. Same principle goes with drilling into the earth, except the steel is bedrock.

Gator, I get you man. Just a lot of frustration down here!!! I am smelling oil everyday now and we all are getting worried. The place I work has seen about 5 customers this week versus 30 last week versus 50 the week before; and everyone who comes in mentions the spill. We have fought back from Katrina, high insurance and recession but this will kill us!! I too, laugh at the ideas being thrown out there but still attemp to remain optimistic on a solution. The liberal press, just like always, puts their twist on everything we're hearing. Im wondering why no one is mentioning how much the Federal government makes off of leases and the production of oil and gas in the Gulf!! Seems to me the press would be all over this. At this point I dont care who is responsible, I just want to know who is going to stop it in a timely and safe manner.

The biggest problem down here is that the media is making it like it chernoble...It's not that bad...

The had a front page picture in OB yesterday of 1 lone tourist sitting on the beach and 5 guys walking around in hazmat suites...I mean are you serious?? First off, it wasn't even a picture taken in Orange Beach, it was taken on Dauphin Island.

I've been fishing almost everyday...there's absolutely no oil from Mobile to OB, but the damn media makes it seem like you'll be swimming in Black Sludge.

Bay St. Louis thats probably another story.

we have a winner!!!!!

and tdaggett, I commend you for your comments about not flying people due to amount of air traffic (safety), media people wanting to be shown only the bad areas and the not wanting to profit off such a situation. I wish more people had your mentallity.
