Like DR2 said, may be a swamp poplar. I wouldn't think it's a cypress because they don't break easily and you should find knees around it. The fruit, leaves, and bark should give a cypress away. River birch aren't necessarily "weak wooded", but they have weak branching due to their acute angle branching. This makes them break easily in high winds. They are very prone to disease too which makes them weaker if or when infected. Pictures would help.

I thought blue gums only grew in Lower Alabama?

Ok thinking about it, when you say it looks like a willow, do you mean a weeping willow? If so it could be a Black Willow which is found in low swampy areas. Just a thought.

yeah i realize I need some pics. As prevalent as they are I figured someone on here would automatically know by the description. It aint a tupelo, cypress, willow for sure since i know what they look like. i can't find a pic and can't find a pic on the net either.

I'll keep looking for pics and see what i can come up with.

place i used to be in was crp that stayed flooded through may and we had a LOT of poplar growing in it that sounds like what you describe with the sloughing bark and easily topped in high winds
