Planting over Harvested cotton
Planting over Harvested cotton
Is there anything that could be planted in a harvested cotton field in September that could be ready for mid duck season? The land that we had in corn last year is in cotton this year. I would not need it for early duck season because we have no ducks early anyway.
Re: Planting over Harvested cotton
There is probably not many options. The growing season is short between September and the avg. first frost data, and the chemicals used in cotton production may keep anything from growing even if there were enough frost free days to grow something. Hardly ever do see any barnyard grass in cotton fields but it will be everywhere in soybeans.

Purely a gamble, certainly not a recommendation.................sow some browntop out into the standing cotton right after the defoliant is applied. Maybe could sow right before defoliant goes out if cotton is running even later than you expect. Leaves falling off cotton will be all that the seed will need as far as cover. Chance residual herbicides are there, chance they are not...get with your farmer and find out. Cut stalks as early as possible following harvest so that the grass can grow out and not be cut, further delaying seed maturity. I would give the application a 20% chance of being successful and 80% chance it is all for not, depends on a ton of variables....cotton maturity, defoliant timing, seed sowing date, Fall rain, cutting of the stalks, residual herbicides in the soil, frost date, soil type, etc., etc. If you are north of HWY 6 then I would not even try it, north of 82 you may have a slight chance, south of 82 and your odds are better. Besides the above scenario, you really do not have any options.
Are we gonna get wet?
