7mm08 or 308
Re: 7mm08 or 308
7-08
it's more accurate down range. and carries more knockdown further than the 308.
they're both good calibers i just like the 7-08 more. been using mine for 8 years now, and don't have any complaints yet.

for exmaple you could kill a 4 greenheads (two banded), a mallard/black cross, and a mallard/gaddy cross and smash a hot blonde on the way back to the ramp and call it a hell of a day
Re: 7mm08 or 308
It's really just a matter of personal prefference. The .284 cal 140gr & 150gr boat tail bullet have some of the best bullet coeficients of anything made. About the only thing that tops them are the 168gr and the 180gr .308 caliber. Both have pro's and con's. Factory loads in the short actions will not stabilize the heavier bullets for long range shooting. But both are capable of making some very long shots in the right hands with the right gun. Handloading brings in a totaly different concept. I wouldn't be afraid of either at 4 to 500 yds. 7mm-08 usually has a little less recoil therefore sometimes more comfortable in less gun. A .308 in a lightweight gun can pound you pretty good!

308
Sometimes you just have to close your eyes, count to ten, take a deep breath and remind yourself that you wouldn't look good in prison stripes... and just smile at that dumbass and walk away.
Re: 7mm08 or 308
there is a reason 308 has so many accuracy records held.

Really as far as hunting goes, it's 6 of 1. Especially around here. The recoil is less in the 7mm since you can get lighter bullets. The lighter 7mm bullets will have little more zip to them and be a little flatter. But either way, they don't perform like their long-action siblings. You just have to consider what your use is. If its for you and you like a big bullet, get a 308. If you are getting it for a smaller person and recoil might be an issue, get a 7mm08. Both will kill any animal that walks in Mississippi just fine. The 308 will be better if you were to use it for something bigger like an elk due to bullet choices available.
Re: 7mm08 or 308
If you plan to hand load your rounds then go for 7mm-08 becasue good factory loads are hard to find, although they are getting more prevalent. If you wanna go factory rounds and not have to spend tons of money on bullets then go for .308.
My wife shoots a 7-08 and I hand load her 140 gr nosler partition and when I say deadly I mean DEADLY! She is a deer's worst nightmare with that thing. I have her gun shooting 1/2 in groups at 100 yards and she has killed several deer at or over 200 yards with it. Very few of them take a step as she is anal about shooting them right, but she shot a doe quartering to her a few years back that ran into the woods about 50 yards and Ray Charles could have trailed that deer.......blood everywhere.
regardless both will kill easily anything you gonna shoot in Mississippi.

What do you plan on using it for, a kid or and adult. If its for a kid start em out on a 243 then move em up to a 308, if they can sling a 7-08 then they can sling a 308 which from previous post are more versitile, who knows if kentuckys hurd moves down maybe one day we will have elk in ms haha

Re: 7mm08 or 308
I am actually looking for myself. I'm not into all the huge magnums. I have shot a 243 all my life and have killed plenty of deer with it. All I want it for is deer and an occasional hog. My oldest son will also use it I'm sure. I don't hunt anywhere that I have to shoot a mile or kill a moose, so I think one of these will do fine.

KWAKHED,
I shoot a 7-08 myself. I bought it for my son and once I started shooting it well, I will get him another one when he out grows his 243.
I got a rem model 7. It needed to be floated and I got a trigger adjustment and now it will drive nails. Even in my hands.
I get my rounds from Georgia arms. They are fair priced and a quality load.
Hope this helps.

I love my .308, I shoot a 165 gr Nossler Accubond and it will put the smack down on the whitetail. It is very accurate and I don't notice the recoil even at the range.
The price, options, and availability of the ammunition is worth looking into and I can't speak for the 7.
