Re: 7mm08 or 308
7mm08 I have a long list of whitetails that have never taken a step after the shock and awe of a federal premium 140 grain Nosler Partition. Deadly just plain deadly!

.308
Hands down.
The best caliber ever. Not debAtable.
Every gun topic uses the 308 as some type of baseline. Just about every one made will shoot.

In my opinion, 308 no questions asked. Although the 7mm08 is a damn fine round as well, there has never been or will ever be a better all around load than a 308. I would take one on any hunt for any animal in North America. Come see me. I got some GOOD loads worked up for my 308's. We will build you one too.

Both are good rounds. Another option to consider is the Remington 260. Very similar in performance and with a lil less recoil than 7mm 08. 260 is still based on .308 case and a dia of .264. Just food for thought.
Re: 7mm08 or 308
260 is one of my favorites. 129SST will flat out do some damage. Recoil is just about nil. You really need to reload or have someone who does to take full advantage of the 260. With RL17 a MV of 2950-3000 is possible with 120-130g bullets. That makes for a very very flat shooting round.redduck wrote:Both are good rounds. Another option to consider is the Remington 260. Re: 7mm08 or 308
i just looked at the ballistics for both rounds and they are both really close, however the 7mm 08 has the nod in almost every category from velocity, energy, short and long range trajectory. this is comparing the 2 closest bullets for each caliber. 7-08 140 grain remington express and 308 150 grain remington express.
so as far as standard round goes, ballistics between the 2 rounds speak for themsleves when comparing apples to apples.
I just looked at the closest comparable bullets, not best performing bullet for each caliber.

308 does have more bullet options, if just deer hunting like most people would be. they both gonna kill a deer with no problems especially if you put the bullet where it needs to be.

Re: 7mm08 or 308
I have owned a Remington .260 for about 10 years... Its a mean round... Dropped a 237 lber last year in its tracks at about 100 yds.

Re: 7mm08 or 308
Its a great question and its been interesting reading everyones take on the two calibers. Im no authority on the the subject but I own both, two 308's and one 7mm-08, which is forsale by-the-way. I am a huge 308 fan for many reasons. Many of these reasons have been previously stated. Dont get me wrong, they are both fine calibers and the only reason im selling my 7 is that its an Encore and I personally have decided I dont like the Encores.
Here is what I know, if you decide to buy a 7 do not buy Hornady Light Magnum rounds for it. I tried them and they were all over the paper and I recently read an article in a mag (maybe Guns & Ammo) about how those rounds were very unstable. This is why I prefer a 308. Its a very stable bullet which makes for an extremely accurate round. I have heard that the 7mm bullet when out in distance becomes unstable and not very accurate.
Another reason I like it is like one said, you can buy it anywhere. I was in a gas station on the back fourty one day and they had 308 shells on the shelf. Snipers use the 308 out to about 500yrds which says alot about the round in my opinion.
Just my two pennies.

Re: 7mm08 or 308
i made the choice myself last year and went the .308 route, simply for the factory ammunition choices out there. There are litterally 4 chioces to each one of the 7-08 choices. I bought a Rem R25 auto so recoil and long range was not so much a concern.

I like both and have or had owned each.. You probably already know that the 243, 7mm-08 are just neck down versions of the 308... The advantage of the 308 is the ability to go after bigger game like Elk or moose if you choose to do so because of the heavier loads out there..KWAKHED wrote:Thanks guys, the responses have been a great help.
