Where do the ducks come from? Are they walkin' round the prairie robbing nests or do they have some kinda chicken house thing?

Re: 3,000 ducks already
Since this is continuing... If you hunted on the other side of the brake on your farm or lease how would you know you were shooting tame or wild birds on any given day? Would you shoot the birds if you knew where they came from on a slow day or just let them land in the dekes. Not advocating tamie hunting at all ,just a legitimate question I can't answer.
Re: 3,000 ducks already
well, I will give credit to the OP. He has taken the cussings and the persecution quite well. I think it is safe to say that many of you ain;t "on board" with this idea

There will be a day....
Re: 3,000 ducks already
seems like to me if you go out and feed wild ducks every day, those ducks would hang around too.
Re: 3,000 ducks already
Geez. Why didn't anyone else think of that. I bet you could feed wild ducks with grain like rice, corn, and beans to prevent them from migrating back north. Someone should try farming and planting grains so they could eat down here. I bet they would never leave!sun down wrote:seems like to me if you go out and feed wild ducks every day, those ducks would hang around too.

Ducks, for the most part, nest in the exact same place marsh they were born, or nested the previous year. It is ingrained in their very instinct that they must migrate. Something tame ducks don't have. That, and there is very little decent nesting habitat down here. That is why almost all the native resident ducks that actually do nest down here, nest in trees. What does their winter habitat habitat turn into in the spring and summer? Farm fields and dried up swamps. Winter habitat does not equal nesting habitat.
You could feed them with a million dollars worth of the best feed and keep you break or field flooded year round, but wild ducks (with the exception of maybe .01%) will go back north to breed.
Re: 3,000 ducks already
what if these ducks migrate north with the others? i wonder if they would come back to the same location. Has anyone ever studied the possibility? Just asking.

Re: 3,000 ducks already
Who knows. I doubt most of them will make it through the season. Plus they migrated down here in a truck. They didn't fly down here. There is the old saying of birds of a feather. Having not been bred in the wild, there is no telling that even if they were to fly back north in the spring if they would have the intuition to know where to nest, how to hide from predators, and generally survive. My guess is a couple of the very few drakes that survive the winter down here may follow wild hens back north (as the hens choose where to nest). The tame hens will probably try and nest down here unsuccessfully or die in the process from predators.sun down wrote:what if these ducks migrate north with the others? i wonder if they would come back to the same location.
