prepping may be a bad word, but let me run this scenario by you.

An ice chest sitting out in the dead heat of the sun empty along with another ice chest sitting under the same heat, but shaded. You put ice in both and the one that was in the shade will keep the ice longer. You have to remember that the ice isn't cooling JUST the contents of the ice chest, it's cooling the inside liner, insulation, etc. The more it has to cool, the shorter time it will last.

If you want to really keep ice the longest, freeze an ice chest before you put contents and ice in it. The chest itself will be colder than the ice, thus keep the ice longer.

There's more "technology" than most realize with an ice chest, but it's all in what you make out of it.

tempering it. like putting boiling water in a thermos for at least 15 min. and letting it temper the insulation before you pour coffee or what ever in.... so liquids stay hot longer, but opposite for a cooler of ice, of course.
Experience is a freakin' awesome teacher...

tempering may be a lingo word as when I hear tempering, I think of taking steel and tempering it to make it stronger (not to be confused with quinching). :)

also too, putting cold contents will allow the ice to last longer as the ice is maintaining a cold temp and not working to achieve a cold temp.

it's all part of thermo dynamics.

I don't have a Yeti (yet) but from what I have seen the Yeti looks like a is a much better built cooler. Maybe you only have to buy one Yeti in your life, but have to buy 3 or 4 colemans. It just a matter of pay now or pay later.

Blake, what do you mean prep it? You have to do something to it before putting in ice!!!!

As far as blowing out the back of the truck, I have never had that happen.
Take ya a empty igloo cube throw it into the back of a Tacoma and hit 75mph see how she rides she will hit the pavement every time…

eSJay I got the 50 as well. I take mine and fill it up with ice and whatever 2 days before I know I’m going somewhere and before I leave drain the water then fill her up with ice and she is good for 5-6 days of July in and out of the sun.

The best part about having a Yeti is you can forget to clean it out for 3 days after being at the lake and the water is still at least cool and the penicillin hasn't started growing yet.

Downside is they are heavy, especially when loaded with drinks and ice. I almost feel bad making my wife carry that thing. :) :)

Not really true, I keep a coleman in the back of my truck, its called having sense enough to run a bunge through one handle. Walllla problem solved, and I still have $250 in my pocket. I use mine daily and it gets beat to hell and back shovels gettin thrown on it and all. I would have to refill it with ice daily no matter what brand. Now if Grizzly bears break out of the Zoo I may run out and buy one, not sure my bunge could keep a bear out.
Damn, i thought I had that one

3 or 4 colemans? Hell I've had twice that many. And if you aint had a cooler fly out yet, my brotha, you must be keepin it calm and cool at 27 mph's...

A fad? Square toed cowboy boots are fads... The duck calling forum is a fad...

By definition, damn I love the dictionary, a fad is a temporary fashion. My yeti has been to hell and back. If there's one thing it aint... It's temporary...

You hatin booty homos can keep your chitty little nagger ragged coolers.

The way you talk I wonder if that cooler gives Bj's too, hell now I am interested, that sure is not an option on a Coleman.
