Favorite 7mm-08 ammo

What is your pick for this caliber? Just doing a little shopping around before I narrow my pick down.

My wife's savage 7mm-08 like the Hornady 139 grain sst. They are tack drivers, and devestating on backstraps, trust me!

remington core loct 120 grain. a little more accurate out of my model 700bdl than the 140's. that being compared to the 140 core loct and the winchester 140's.

dirt rolled deer out to 225. after i finish off my box i currently have, i will buy a box of the hornady bullets and see how they do.

interested to hear the rest of you guys opinions on this topic as well.

alright so i have been researching these things after i read the article. where do you buy them? can you buy them already loaded or you have to load them yourself. how much if you can buy them already loaded?

IMO the 7mm-08 is best suited for a 120 grain bullet. I shoot the 120 HP from Remington, but am going to start loading a 120 grain BTX.

Unless i'm reading the numbers wrong Hornady is out doing most all of them in every category. velocity, ernergy, and not loosing much in long range trajectory. Someone who understands ballistics feel free to chime in, i would like to hear exactly what your reasoning is for favoritism on hornady, barnes, federal etc..

cwink, i currently have been using the 120's, mainly for accuracy reason's in "driving tacks" but have been looking for something without sacrificing accuracy for more energy/knockdown. What's your thinking/logic on this new bullet your looking to load?

120 grain IMHO is about the perfect size for the deer in our area. Barnes bullets are hollow points and a 120 grain HP will have about the same knockdown power as the 150 non HP and will be faster and flatter.. The 120 HP boat tail from Barnes will be one bad MOFO.

The problem with Barnes bullets is that they are solid, except the MRX which is almost prohibitively expensive. solid bullets are harder to get to open. I know Barnes has the petals that open and carve through deer and whatnot but I'm not sold. Hornady has a new bullet out called GMX for gilding metal expanding. http://www.hornady.com/store/GMX-Gildin ... eXpanding/ I might try it.

I've shot deer with plenty of .284 caliber bullets and the two that died the fastest were shot with non solid non bonded bullets. One was sierra game king and the other was with a SST. SST is definitely sexier and has better BC.

Your gun will tell you what it likes to shoot. I would buy a box of 120-140g (unless you have a slow twist barrel then you might need to step down to 100g) bullets. Actually buy two. One SST and one Barnes/Accubond/ect. See which one your gun likes. Remember to clean you barrel before switching ammo. If you find one that shoots well go and get two more boxes of the same lot. Most companies have a significant variation between lots of ammo.

all that being said the barnes is a hammer and if you decide to shoot one aim for the shoulder. Dead center. You want that bad boy to open up and hit as much "stuff" as possible. I doubt you will ever recover one.

alright, according to the numbers offered by federal and hornady.

the 3 best standard loads for this rifle as far as velocity and energy per foot pound and wind drift, in no particular order are:

federal trophy bonded tip 140 grain
federal nosler partioned 140 grain
hornady 139 grain sst

have any of you guys compared these rounds? any results? or have you guys found that the numbers don't lie?

Federal Premium 140 grain
Never had a deer run more than 20 yards using these.

120 gr. Sierra Spitzer in front of 39.2 grns. of Hodgdon H4895 powder in Winchester brass with a Winchester large rifle primer.


The 140 gr. Nosler AccuBond is a bad little bullet. The 140 gr. Barnes Triple Shock is hard to beat on expansion (but are really expensive). A good no-nonsense bullet is the 140 gr. Sierra BT Soft Point.

Having trouble finding 7mm-08 ammo; anyone know where I can find a decent selection? Trying to find out what works best in my sons gun.
