Ask DS dog breed selection

Postby munyoz70 » Tue Nov 16, 2010 9:48 am

Ok so christmas is comming up and my 54yrd old widdowed father has shown interest in getting a dog, but just wont pull the trigger. He wants a smaller inside outside dog. To quote him "I want one that I can leave outside most of the time, but let inside so he doesnt freeze/over heat" He has no interest in making it a deer/duck dog just looking for a companion that is woods capable maybe even tree a squirrel but that will prob never happen. My dad deer hunts but rarely shoots, more into watching with a rifle in a total non-greenpeace type way. He says he wants a 12-15 inch beagle but we think there might be better options for him. So lets hear yalls thoughts.

Requirements
manly dog no pug, palmeranians etc...
not high strung
doesnt shed alot
good inside and out
semi small without it being a $#!+ eater
old man friendly

I'd say beagle, jack russell, or maybe even a brittany spaniel. But if he wants something that will tree a squirrel, definitely a jack russell!! Those little dogs will sho nuff run a squirrel.

I've got a female beagle that lives inside now and she hardly ever barks. It's all about how they're brought up. Just get her fixed at the appropriate time and let him have it. They're sone of the more affectionate dogs you can find. Had them as rabbit dogs as a kid then as I got older I had beagles that transitioned to pets.

I think Jack russell are a little on the "high strung side" I've owned one in the past. Even at nine years old it was still go, go, go. Great dogs but maybe too enerjetic for an older man. I'd vote for the beagle.

Jack Russels are way high strung... Brinttany's are pretty neat dogs, but do tend to have longer coats..

Another option is a Daschund. Create character not to high strung, can trail a deer and will make a great watch dog..

just read up on these, sounds like a cool dog, how stubburn and social was she? Do they like riding in front of truck or would they be a bed of the truck dog?

Sorry to hear about loosing her.

I love our miniature dachshund. He has a great little personality. Is easy to care for, loves to play or will sit in your lap all day. My wife's family has always had dachshunds and every one has been a little different personality, but all good dogs for pets.

tough little rascals too.....ours gets irritable sometimes with our doberman and chases her around the house
